Re: Loading an avatar picture

His mother grew up on the island, and his cousins were close friends of mine growing up there. He and I have actually got a children's book in the works, though we've both been too busy to do much with it for a while. I'd say 75% of his non-commissioned work that I've seen has elements of fantasy, s...

Re: Loading an avatar picture

Now I've gotta ask: what is it? It looks like a staircase in a house; but even at 400% zoom, I can't figure out more than that. And the file name has "Whale" in it, and I can't guess what a whale has to do with that. It is a staircase, but yeah, most of the detail is gone. Here's a link t...

Thanks Martin, that did the trick. Though it took me a while to figure out how to log into my blog, it worked after I sorted that out.

Re: Loading an avatar picture

Sorry to be an idiot about this, but even after reading the thread I still have not been able to figure out how they got it to work. I tried putting it on Google Docs and Flickr and using the URL, but no dice. If my ISP provides storage, I am sadly ignorant of it or where to find it. I tried drawing...

But if you've never gotten ANY email back, you might want to email Joni and make sure your stories are getting in. Also, check your spam filter settings and see if the messages are getting blocked... Agreed. Lately you should be getting one soon after submitting, to confirm that it was accepted, an...

Re: First Four-Fifty Critique Exchanges

We're not approaching the deadline yet! We're not even half way through the quarter! Don't scare me like that! Sorry, I didn't intend to, I just needed a slick way to start the sentence, sort of a lead in. Also I work slowly enough that if I'm not in final edits a month and a half out, I might not ...

Re: First Four-Fifty Critique Exchanges

Hello all,

As we approach the deadline for Q2, I wanted to see if there is still anyone looking to exchange a first 450 with me. If so, let me know.

Re: Q1 Volume 29

As far as Q2 goes, for once it appears I might have to make a decision between two stories. One is mythic fantasy (and fairly short), while the other is more gritty and urban, but still predominantly fantasy (with some imaginary science) and will likely be significantly longer. The former is awaitin...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

Because my first passport, when I was 21, listed me as male. (Doh. Some silly fool at the passport processing center must have looked at my name rather than the information I'd filled in on my application form to make that call. The state of Kentucky issued me two consecutive drivers licenses listi...

Critiques Exchanges for Q2?

Got something in the works for Q2 that needs a fresh eye? Maybe you need to swap stories! I have a highly polished (not to say a great story, but most typos and grammar issues have been addressed) fantasy/slipstream story of about 13k words that really needs a reader. I would just like to see how t...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

Been trying to submit for the last few hours, but it says the contest is closed when I try to submit online. This is a total bummer! That is a bummer! Do you have any friends on the west coast? Email the story to them, and beg them to submit it in your name. As long as they enter your information i...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

I'm in, with 20 or so minutes of 2011 to spare (when I posted, that is). Congrats to those of you who know you deserve them for Q4 (even if you were rejected like me--hey, you wrote a story, so congrats). At least this time I'm not waiting 2 years to try again. On the upside, my rejection left me wi...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Every time I had a stomach bug as a child, she gave me raw potatoes and Vernors for their reputed ability to calm a queasy stomach. Didn't work. So now I drink Canada Dry. Do you still eat raw potatoes? I can see giving Vernors when you're feeling crappy, but raw potatoes are just...raw and earthy.

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

I don't know why, but whenever I think of never giving up, that line pops into my head. That reminds me of a plagiarism bit from The Daily Show ( http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-may-18-2006/borrowed-time ). There is a Paris Hilton joke that some may find offensive, so view at your own risk. T...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

I read her reply on my cell phone, which didn't (I later discovered) reproduce any of the smilies -- no missing image icon, no ascii smiley, nothing. And I thought, "Holy sh*t, she must hate me. What a really defensive, nasty response." I spent a while thinking about how to respond, then ...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

I thought I'd just cast my lot with Martin on this one. It has nothing to do with our geographic proximity, though. What follows is a rant, not aimed at anyone, but instead at social phenomena I have observed. I think my issue with emoticons and smileys (that's how I spell it, so sue me) and such th...

Thanks, Kyle. Nice to be here. I do find it somewhat amusing that someone who lists his location (part time) as Beaver Island would complain about loneliness. You're practically in The Shining territory there! Yeah, I do dig my solitude. My wife doesn't let me hang around writers much though, even o...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

We have to give the Australians some kind of competition--it seems like every year there are three or four in the winners circle (I know, I know--it's a nation, even a whole continent, and we're just another state, but still). We have to represent the Mitten (holding up hand in idioti...
