Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

All, I couldnt' find my receipt for my entry and I'm pretty used to getting Rs by now, so I sent Joni an email to make sure they got my entry. This is what she said: Dear Joe, It is still being judged. You are in there just fine. Notices go out every week and this week more go out tonight. It will ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Yeah, teaching does the same thing. You just get used to riffing on a bare-bones script and working the "audience." And just between you and me, (Uh, I'm here, too.) There. Now I've told you all my secrets. And yet even knowing that, I'll bet if you saw me perform, you'd still be astonish...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Much of the day was devoured by locusts again, and more work piles up. And I have to make ready for the big conference in Colorado Springs next Monday and Tuesday; Space Command is having a conference/symposium. I also have contest finals to judge , housekeeping stuff, errands, and I have been tryi...

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?

I know that Ender's Game is THE classic (and I enjoyed it), but OSC's Songmaster blew me away. If you want to read a book in one sitting that pulls you through with the hero getting into trouble, more trouble, and then even more trouble, try Lois McMaster Bujold's Miles Vorkosigan series, starting w...

It does have the feel of the calm before the storm, doesn't it? *hums a few bars of Waltzing Matilda* Let's have a ROLL CALL then. Here are the folks I know are still in. If I miss your name, add it in and repost as I'm not always sure who's entered which quarter. Tina (gower21) Corbin Francis Brun...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Hmm, we'd best dig ourselves in then. *refreshed the stock of brownies, tequila and root beer floats* Just in case the wave hits early, ya know. And, since this song has been stuck in my head ever since this thread was renamed, I figure it's time to spread it around a little. When I read this threa...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I didn't get into Clarion West, so all my waiting energy is on WotF now. And getting something ready for Q2. Emphasis added because I agree so much. WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! etc. I've lately been feeling the novel itch. I may finally turn "Scramble" into the novel it was always intended to be...

"Monster," shouted Gus. And he yanked her arm, dragging her down the street. Or: "Monster!" Gus grabbed her arm and yanked her down the street. [end-quote] Note how much more immediate the second one is. Faster. If I'm in danger, I'd want the second Gus saving me. My opinion abo...
Anyone read til.html]this essay/speech by Geoff Ryman? I gotta say, I really dig his argument and the direction he'd like to see science fiction take. I just finished Tobias S. Buckell's new book Arctic Rising , and reading this speech transcription a day later rea...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

What I've always wondered about is whether finalists (or even semifinalists) find out while they are still in the running for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place spots, or do they get notified that they are a finalist (or semi) only after the winners have been chosen? That is, is there a period of heightened t...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Still waiting for news. Do the rejections always come by email (as opposed to SASE) and does the "good news" always come by a personal phone call? I went to Duotrope once. To retain my sanity, I refuse to go back!

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hi, I'm a former computer programmer turned pharmacist, but that's just how I pay the mortgage. My true love is writing. It's what gives me joy. My one week of empty nest syndrome turned into writing time (sorry, kids). BUT I'm having a devil of a time marketing book one of my completed trilogy. How...
