Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Speaking of war, I thought The Imitation Game was extraordinary. It was based on a true story which made it even more touching... about a true hero who changed our world in spite of it crapping on him all the while. It's good to remember that such heroes do exist in reality as well as fiction. Thank...

Re: Five Minute Rant

It has taken me an entire lifetime to come to this revelation. When an administrator sends you a survey, it is because he must send you the survey; he doesn't want honesty or troubleshooting, but compliments and affirmation. When confronted with anything other than gushing or stroking, he will take ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I used to write 100 word stories. Then maybe a page or two. I couldn't seem to write anything longer than that and have it come out coherent. Then I buckled down and wrote the first draft of a novel, 100K+ words. I worked in all sorts of subplots, themes, world building, a large cast of characters,...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

The late polling said that the 'yes' vote was loud but soft and the 'no' vote was silent but solid. So it proved - nowhere near as close as the polls suggested. Thank goodness for the secret ballot. As Elinor says, the economic numbers never made any sense. Although they say 'over for a generation'...

I'm posting here to keep myself from twitching on the V31Q3 thread. It's just too soon for that. It would be rude. I can't imagine you twitching much. If I do not intend my words to be sexist then you may not legitimately describe them as 'well intentioned sexism.' I'd like to offer up an anecdote in rebuttal of the idea that unintended -ism doesn't qualify as the -ism in question. When I was in 7th grade, I sometimes rode the bus to school. The ...

Our neighbour has a dog called Basil. An excellent name--for a dog. We often hear her out in the yard, yelling "BASIL!" as loud as she can. Possibly you have to be British to fully appreciate this. (Or just raised on Fawlty Towers.) Did your neighbor use the same voice as Fawlty's wife? Y...
