Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread
Received my 25th rejection yesterday. In 8 months and 8 stories, I've received 2 personal rejections and a second-round email. I think I'm okay with this - in a sense - but you know, it wouldn't hurt to hear better news.
... onward.

I think we've OD'd on Q1 and have no effort left for the other threads.

I like the symbol - no problems there - but I don't love the three different fonts on the same cover.

At ArmadilloCon last year they had a panel on Ghost Stories. Three panelists came with ghost stories (closer to what the description said), one person came ready to talk about how to write ghost stories. It was a little awkward, but Scott Johnson, resident ghost story collector, carried the hour.

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?
I've enjoyed "Shades of Milk and Honey." I will admit that a few lines get TOO close to Austen for me, but I absolutely love the magic system - it's very easy to follow along with her descriptions of glamour. Apparently Book Two is NOT Austen with magic - it's more along the lines of regen...

On second thought, I need to remind my future self about 8-9 months from now - if I reminded the July 30, 2013 Dantzel then I'd be in the same pickle!
All this future talk reminds me of How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe. Anyone else read it?

Congrats Alex!!! I'm in the same boat as Martin - I'm racing through the Hugo ballot as fast as I can. Can I just remind myself a year from now to remember to start AS SOON AS THE PACKETS COME OUT with the novels and work my way down to the short stories? I'm up to the novellas, and there is NO way ...

At times yes and at times no. My story at DSF has now been out for twenty one days when the rejects are at 18-19. Also, my Apex is at 30+ days, well outside the norm and no overlooked rejects. The faster ones are a bit more reliable on the time thing at Duotrope. Agreed. DSF is another one that is ...

wotf054 A long and depressing streak of rejections for me has ended in style: My story "The Long View" just sold to The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction . My goal since WOTF27 has been to sell a couple stories to Asimov's or F&SF , so I guess I'm halfway to having to come up ...

This is why I'm saying if I get another form rejection for Q3 I'm outta here! Seriously, getting positive results motivates me to keep writing. Getting form rejections doesn't. I'm not giving up. Hurt, tired, but still going. No matter what the result is each quarter. That's the only way to make it...

Re: Five Minute Rant
I'm going to totally recognize the ranty-ness of this thread - having exercised its power numerous times - but I wanted to pose a less discouraging view of receiving rejections quickly. I believe that with most slush stories, the editor doesn't need to think about the story before rejecting it. This...

A great read, Steve! I liked your writing and thought you had some lovely lines in there, but this was one of my favorites: "like a demented traffic cop in slow motion"

Yes, this BA English graduate also gave a big sigh of relief. I keep feeling like I shot myself in the foot by pursuing English and Dance instead of other languages or history. It still would have been helpful, but I guess that's why I married a microbiologist! Given my desire to write hard sci-fi ...
