Re: Has the line between sci fi and fantasy changed?

Don't get too hung up on creditenials. You can write SF without a science degree, you can even do hard sf. Nancy Kress and Greg Bear both are humanities type degree people, but by working at the research they turn out fine hard SF. I'm trying to write serious SF and I am an unlettered fool without a...

Re: Has the line between sci fi and fantasy changed?

it is a real fuzzy division. I do expect that the S in my SF be plausible, however I have been called a tough room. Fantasy used the redhead stepchild of the sec fix rows, but for years now it has taken over the shelfs more and more. Personally that's sad for me. I only write SF horror very few atte...

Re: Is this a 'wandering' opening?

I agree the reversal works better, but don't be too hard on yourself that you would never think of it. 1) you're very close to the problems, as all creators are 2) You're learning, as are we all. Dilemma and Character as quickly as possible are going general rules. Another good general rule is what ...

Re: Five Minute Rant

A couple of years agao in a party at Loscon I was speaking with an agent from an fairly well known agency that reps SF and Fantasy writers. I was just being social and I mentioned that I had 2 semis and 2 HM from writers fon the future and her response was quate 'Why aren't you sellin?" So I ha...

Re: Chicon 7

Oh, you optimistic people. It'd be nice to get a con schedule in July, but this is a fan run con and it could be August before we see a panel schedule. That said, last time I was in Chicago for a Worldcon I had a pretty good time and the venue is nice and compact. It won't be a con with death marche...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Man I feel for you on those flat form rejections and I can totally relate to a sense of anger. Back in 2010 I submitted a short story to the contest. In my subjective opinion the best I had written. At this point I had already scored two HM and two SF so I was feeling pretty god about the work. KD s...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Abyss and Apexgave me a very nice rejection stating that the pieces was "well written," however that thought the character -- and it is a one character piece -- was a little too flat to carry the tale. It was kinda odd though getting a rejection letter that had so clearly been personally w...

Re: PROMETHEUS Speculation/Discussion (Potential Spoilers)

I agree, it is important that Cmaeron's writes and Scott doesn't. When the film sucks under Comeron, it really is *all* his fault. Scotts just can't tell a good script from a bad one. Give him a good script and you have a decent chance of getting a masterpiece, give him a crap script and you get fil...

Re: PROMETHEUS Speculation/Discussion (Potential Spoilers)

Don't get me wrong, I like Cameron's Aliens a ton--in fact, it's probably the best film of his career, except for maybe Titanic. (Avatar and Terminator, entertaining as they are, are basically plagiarized cheesy-action popcorn fluff in an expensive, shiny package. I thinks Cameron's best films at T...

Re: PROMETHEUS Speculation/Discussion (Potential Spoilers)

All in all, I'd say it's second only to the original Ridley Scott ALIEN. Better than Cameron's '86 sequel, I dare say. But of course my opinion is just that: an opinion. Allow me to polietly disagree with this sentiment. While I understand there are many people unhappy with Cameron's Aliens I feel ...

Re: PROMETHEUS Speculation/Discussion (Potential Spoilers)

My take on seeing the film yesterday: Visually - stunning. The first film that I have regretted selecting the 2-D presentation. Conceptually -daring. You can see a desires to deal with big ideas. Execution - crap. The writing sucked, the script varied from boring to insulting. Can we get at least 1 ...

Re: Paranormal Horror/Paranormal Romance

Thank you for correcting me. The books are wonderful, but the titles do sound quite similar. The mistake was an honest one. Yeah, there is nothing in the titles that might give you a clue as to the order. I kept getting tripped up on the second book and in siting on calling it shapeless not changel...

Re: Paranormal Horror/Paranormal Romance

The first two things that come to mind are Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series, which starts with "Timeless" and is Victorian/steampunk/paranormal; and Carrie Vaughn's Kitty series. Ah hem It ENDS with Timeless, the book order for that series is Soulless Changelss Blameless Heartl...

Re: Frank Herbert quote

I've long maintained the hardest part fo writing is 'Butt to chairm fingers to keyboard.' Though I have had a bout of writers block a period stretching from about 1983 through 1988 where I had few, nearly zero, story ideas at all. By the end of that period I had literally given up the idea that I wa...

Though my waiting for Q1 is over, I admit that the waiting in this business is the part I have the hardest time dealing with. I think the best possible thearpy is to throw yourelf into more writing. More short strories, get some of your longer fiction written, be active in creating new stuff and you...
