Re: Chicon 7

Mike, I think the former winners will number more like three dozen. I spotted 19 in a quick scan of the list of program participants, and at least another dozen in the list of registered members (although some of those could be supporting members). I'm talking about -my- Writer Children, who total ...

Re: Connie Willis

If you have any degree of success, you're going to acqure your share of nasty critics. I have a lady in Israel who loathes everything I've written, says so at length and in detail on her blog, and feels I am the single worst writer in the history of science fiction. I -could- point to 7 shelves of m...

Re: Worldcon for Beginners

Makes sense to root for the Cardinals if you're a South Sider. Reason: long before that football team out
in Arizona was the Cardinals, they were the St. Louis Cardinals, and if you go back to pre-history
when I was a kid, they were the Chicago Cardinals and played in Commisky Park.

Re: Worldcon for Beginners

I can't speak for what anyone else is doing, but I know I'm doing the folloing: -- a presentation of 5 short films made from my stories (about 2 1/2 hours) -- a 110-photo slide show - "Baby Photos" - showing a bubch of beardless and braless wannabee young writers, juxtaposed to the decrepi...

Re: Worldcon for Beginners

I see Chicon 7 is up around 5200 members. Should be pushing 5600 or so by the time it starts. They tell me that the schedule will be posted on the web page early next week. The committee has not only rented out the Adler Planetariun for Thursday night, but they've also bought 75 seats to a Cubs game...

Re: Chicon 7

I know at least 3 Writers of the Future will be at Chicon, because they're among the dozen or so of
what Maureen McHugh calls "Mike's Writer Children" (some of whom are almost as old as Mike) that
I'll be treating to brunch on Sunday.

Re: Chicon 7

"Mr. Resnick, if I were going to read just one book of yours which would you suggest?" I hate singling any one out; they're all my children. If you want my bestseller, SANTIAGO made the NYTimes list and was continuously in print for 25 years. If you want my most-honored, KIRINYAGA has 67 m...

Re: Worldcon for Beginners

Thanks for the kind words; glad you liked the story. I never worry about the competition. When I was starting out I beat David Brin for one Hugo, and Harlan Ellison and Ursula Le Guin for another. And as an established writer, I've lost Hugos to people I've never heard of. It evens out. :-)

Re: Worldcon for Beginners

Martin> You can't imagine how difficult it was to get your hands on even half the nominees before the electric agent and the voter's packets. Back in the Jurassic, when Carol and I started going, the program book was the size of a thin trade paperback, and the entire program listing took about 3 pag...

Re: Ray Bradbury

DragonCon just asked me to write a tribute to Ray, which I did, though I won't be at DragonCon
this year (except maybe via Skype from Worldcon). Made me realize, once again, just how much
writers like myself owe him.

Re: Has the line between sci fi and fantasy changed?

It's all marketing nomenclature. You just write the best story you can and let the publisher worry about what to call it. I am considered and labeled a science fiction writer, amd have written a total of 4 novels that have been marketed as fantasy -- yet I doubt that I've had 5 serious science-ficti...

Re: Worldcon for Beginners

Not only is Kevin, who was autographing, at DragonCon this year -- but there's very little likellihood that Hal Clement or Charlile Brown, both listed in the program excerpt, will show up this year either. :-)

Re: big names

Not entirely the case. Yes, some lower-level zines and small-press anthologies pay a nickel a word, and yes, Galaxy, F&SF and Astounding were paying 3 cents a word in the early 1950s. But most of the prozines in the early 1950s were still paying 1 to 2 cents a word -- and these days, you can do ...
