Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

I pulled out an old (June 2017 timeframe) piece of flash fiction that eventually morphed itself into a 3,000 word short story. I had abandoned it after the folks at Critters crucified it because the story apparently raised more questions than it answered, which just frustrated me. In a way I guess i...

Re: Retellings

I'd speculate that just about every story is really a retelling of some kind or another. After all, just how many really *new* ideas are there? Think how many vampire stories and ghost stories and elf/goblin/dragon stories there are -- aren't they all really based on the same premise? Yet they're al...

Congratulations! Delivering a baby is MUCH more exciting than delivering a manuscript. Best of luck.

Welcome, Ayman! You're going to love it here. Plenty of time for you to whip a story into shape before the end of year deadline for Q1.

I mean, do any of you sit down and just write what flows from your mind and fingertips without planning, outlining, and researching? Welcome Blake! Hope you're having ...

Re: Form vs Personal Rejection

I usually count it as a personal rejection if the sender mentions something they either really liked about my story and/or offered some specific reason for why they didn't accept it. For example, I recently got this one, which I consider a personal rejection: Dear Morgan, Thank you for your patience...

Re: Where do you get your inspiration?

A lot of my story ideas have come from playing video games and wanting to take things a different direction than they did. Such as "What if Zelda was jealous that Link found the Master Sword?" Ha ha! That's awesome! And gives me a good excuse to play more video games. "I'm doing rese...

Re: Where do you get your inspiration?

Ahhh...the age-old question. It always seems to be different for everyone. But I think what it really all comes down to is keeping an open mind and an active curiosity, trying to see old things in new ways, paying attention to what's going on around you, and always asking yourself, "What if...?...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Got a personal rejection from F&SF last night. That’s pretty delightful, for me. I got a form rejection from them a few months ago on a different story. I still want that first sale, of course, but like you guys said, this means I’m on the right track. Just keep writing, finishing, and submitti...

Re: How Short Is Too Short?

My Q4 submission started out as a 1,500 word flash story. After it went through Critters, the message I got was that it needed a lot more fleshing out. So after several rewrites, it morphed into 7,000 words. Hope I did it enough justice and didn't just end up blowing lots of hot air into a small bal...

For those of you getting final rounds, "so close!", etc., this Twitter thread from Apex's Lesley Connor is important reading . Once you're at that level, it's not a lack of skill or competence; it's just taste and magazine style. You are good enough: the magazines aren't big enough. You'r...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I've sent several stories out to Flash Fiction Online this year. None have been accepted yet, but I've received personal feedback on two of them. In my last one, Suzanne Vincent emailed to say my story made it into the final round of reviews, wasn't selected, but if I was interested, she'd be happy ...
