Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Not to make anyone twitchy, but according to The Grinder, average response time from WOTF is 94 days and my Q1 story is now at 93 days. lol

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

I'm twitching, but not for Q1 results. I went WAY overboard last night on last-minute redlining for my Q2 entry and now I'm thinking I might have to pull an all-nighter because this entry WILL get submitted tomorrow ahead of Saturday's deadline! Good thing I have tomorrow off from work. This is by f...

Re: Another question; this time about story inspiration and focus

Here are my two French francs-worth on the topic... As soon as I start writing anything, that nasty little Tasmanian Devil that lives inside my soul spins up and starts telling me it's crap, it's cliche, it's been done a thousand times before, no one's going to like it, you should just really quit w...

Middle of the Night Writing

I woke up last night around one in the morning and knew I wouldn't get back to sleep unless I got right up and wrote some stuff down. So I left the bedroom and turned on a lamp and spilled the contents of my brain out onto the pages of my notebook. Thirty minutes later I read over what I had written...

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

I'm on my final round of polishing, then it's off to the submission form in a few days. No way I'm waiting until the last minute like last quarter . . . that was a nightmare.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Another question. The website wasn't working when I submitted, so I had to do hard copy... Does that mean I'll be notified of results by snail mail? The wait is killing me already even though I'm pretty chill and patient in the real world. You regulars are both helpful and hyping things to an unhea...

I just finished Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. It's my new favorite. My last favorite was the Delirium trilogy by Lauren Oliver.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Is it common to submit the same story (with extra editing /tweaking) for the contest more than once? That's very interesting. My only question would be, since Dave has been the first reader of the contest for several years now, wouldn't he recognize the same story submitted more than once? I wonder...

Re: Rules of Writing

Rules? Hmmm...I guess I've never really thought about rules before, or even guidelines for that matter. I did set two writing goals for myself this year though: 1) Enter WOTF every quarter 2) Submit two new pieces of flash fiction to professional markets every month So far, so good on the first goal...

Re: Fairy Tale Rewrite

Gregory Maguire made quite a successful career from his fairy tale retellings (Wicked, Leaping Beauty, Mirror Mirror, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, etc.) I think the real key is: what new twist can you give the story to make it fresh and different? Making only a few small tweaks to the original...

Results tend to come on Thursdays. But any day can be a Thursday, it's just typically Thursdays.

Superstitious? Not us!

Bwa ha ha! That's awesome!

My results have come on a Friday, a Tuesday, and a Tuesday, respectively.

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

I pulled out an old (June 2017 timeframe) piece of flash fiction that eventually morphed itself into a 3,000 word short story. I had abandoned it after the folks at Critters crucified it because the story apparently raised more questions than it answered, which just frustrated me. In a way I guess i...

I have to disagree with the notion that every sentence must be jam-packed with tension. Certainly there will be periods of high tension. However, the reader will also need periods in which he or she can stop and catch their breath, otherwise a writer runs the risk of exhausting his readers. There ar...
