Re: Success!

I don't think so. Details are sketchy at present but I got the proofs this a.m. so all should be known soon.

Re: Success!

wotf013 And I've actually sold another story but I can't say where as yet. Which is that my story 'Conspiracy of Silence' will be appearing in 'More Alternative Truths' due out on 11/11. Sometime in 2015, just after I'd sold 'The Old Man on the Green' to T Gene Davis, a reader actually enquired whe...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Thank you, but to be honest the positive attitude around this forum makes membership an easy load to carry. I'm very wary of organisations whose members lack the mutually-supportive ethos. But before we get carried away, I'm not yet a household name in my own household, let alone someone who invaria...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

So... you're killing us... what was the question? Something like: What business is carried on in London by houses called Phillips and Bonhams? Now since then I've been underbidder on a clock sold by auction at Bonhams, but at the time I'd no idea. I held the option at the time, so the issue was, ta...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

So the next time I go on a quiz show I'm going to introduce myself 'Call me Ishmael and I'm a writer." wotf011 Fixed. wotf001 Oh yes. Let's get the quotation right. But actually the only time I was on a quiz show I at first found it quite nerve-wracking to say anything. The show was called '15...

Re: Form vs Personal Rejection

My rule of thumb is that in order to count as personal, a rejection has to refer to your story. Analog, for example, has a realtively rare 'send more' form rejection which is an honour in itself. As I recall it makes a reference to liking your style of writing, but says nothing about the story itsel...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Ah! Thanks JV, but sadly the membership fee is nearly two thirds of the income from a professional story. I've been qualified for quite a while, because SFWA don't employ the exclusions that WotF does. However, although I'm told there are discounts for impoverished foreigners such as I, I'll have to...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

You are most kind, Moon. I'm not sure whether I was being asked for my story method or my determination method. Stubbornness comes as part of the package when you're born in Yorkshire. Plus I tend to tackle things that I find daunting because they aren't allowed to beat me. Such as taking up steeple...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Ishmael, your determination is certainly an inspiration! ... So how do you do it? 1. Idea 2. extensive research 3. start writing 4. write your protagonist into an impossible corner 5. have another idea to get your protagonist out of the corner 6. write the rest 7. go back and eliminate verbiage and...

Re: Why Do You Write?

How would you know? People now considered geniuses were not necessarily so recognised in their lifetimes. How many paintings did Van Gogh sell? Okay, the answer is actually one, not none as many people think. (The Red Vineyard at Arles). Particularly in science fiction it's very easy for your work t...

Re: Success!

I suspect I almost always submit to the biggest venues before a story 's ready, for the simple reason that I don't know it's not ready until it's rejected, I re-read it and I see what's wrong. Right now I have about fifty stories out in the wild. That's largely because I refuse to give up. I've made...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

I wish all the best to those aiming for 4 in 35. Sadly my entry streak comes to an end with 34/4. Unless I've miscounted, my entry streak goes back to 29/3 and my streak of HM or better to 32/1. Prior to 32/1 I'd netted just 2 HMs. It just goes to show you can learn how to do this (more or less). My...

Re: Questions: Scene breaks

I used to be told I had a great accent too. Then I asked how it was considered possible for an Englishman to speak English with an English accent. I mean, do we accuse the French of speaking French with a French accent? (I have to concede that my accent nowadays places me somewhere between Windsor ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Now we are in the last week, one of traditional heavy traffic. Also remember the online entry system has a habit of shutting down part way through the last day, so if you're going to run it to the line, make sure you have Joni's email. And, for what in all probability will be my lost shot at the tit...

Re: Success!

I fear I took your name in vain in my letter to Mike, George. He replied that if George vouched for me it was good enough for him, so I hope the story I sent him was worthy of your trust. I've worked and reworked this one until I hardly know where I am with it, but I'm firmly convinced it's at least...

Re: Success!

Thanks George, I didn't know this. Maybe after this quick flush of pro-sales I might summon up the courage to ask. Unfortunately of course it will also put an end to my career as a WotF competitor. I don't think even Joni can stretch the rules any further to keep me in. Theoretically, if Flame Tree ...

Re: Flame Tree seeking short stories

From correspondence with Gillian Whitaker I have ' in the range of 60,000 to 120,000 words – in the realms of SF, fantasy, horror and crime fiction.' Also 'our preference really is for completely new novels, previously unpublished in any form (on the basis that they have already had some exposure in...

Wow, Ishmael! You are an inspiration. When are we going to see your first novel? Thanks, Preston, but remember I couldn't sell anything in the first half of the year so I wasn't too inspirational then! Actually I self-published a novel The Prophets of Baal a few years ago.
