Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

"Yes." She tugged at his buttons. He slapped her hand away. "I don't think so." "You're not so quick to refuse," she said, "when it's my sister." "I didn't have a choice," said Mike. "No one does with her." "Held a gun to your head, di...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

But how about this: "Yes." She tugged at his buttons. He slapped her hand away. "I don't think so." "You're not so quick to refuse," she said, "when it's my sister." Not only using he said/she said to show who is talking, but also as a little bit of a dramiti...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

"Monster," shouted Gus. And he yanked her arm, dragging her down the street. Or: "Monster!" Gus grabbed her arm and yanked her down the street. [end-quote] Note how much more immediate the second one is. Faster. If I'm in danger, I'd want the second Gus saving me. My opinion abo...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

@Patrick. Awesome. @Martin. That was ridiculously obscure. I got it tho. @Corbin. I prefer your 2nd example. Less words, and I'm not a fan of the," he said, then did something else - type of style. As for one or two ! even if in dialog, I would think that's character and story dependent. Use e...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Consider: "It's another frickin' monster!" Gus shouted, pulling at her arm. Vs. Suddenly Gus pulled at her arm. It was another monster! NICE example, Teach! Really makes your point. Unless the text were very much in the voice of Gus, I could never write the latter one. Or just: "Mons...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Well I'm just curious to see where we are in the process for this quarter. So far I'm good; of course that ol' email could be waiting for me at home, that old familiar friend of either rejection or HM.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Any results yet? Rejections or HM's? I imagine that's all they've gotten to so far. The forum here “The Contest - Quarterly Topics, and Other Items” has a subforum up top named “Quarterly Results” that currently lists one rejection so far from forum members. Duotrope lists these so far: 1. 121-day ...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

Any word yet on rejections or HMs? Probably not since they're busy planning the workshop and stuff. But just wondering when results will begin to surface.

Re: Q1 Volume 29

Well Q4 Volume 28 is over for the ones who did not win. So perhaps those of us who are once again running for the gold should start posting in the current quarter's topic. Not that I have much to say, but I've decided to try and take a more active part on the forum this quarter. At least that's wha...

Re: Posting 450s from winning / semi-Fi / published stories?

If you are still trying to sell it to markets, yes. I don't know what the limit is, but on the Orson Scott Card writing forums, they say it's the first 13 typed lines of the MS. (13 lines given the title and white space is the top of the page, the 13 lines the bottom, thus, only your first page.) J...

Re: Posting 450s from winning / semi-Fi / published stories?

Hi, Corbin, How much of the story is that? I ask because you might want to take it down. Some markets might consider it "published", and these forums are searchable on Google. I don't think 450 words will get anone in trouble, but I'd hate to see you lose your First Rights with that longe...

Re: Posting 450s from winning / semi-Fi / published stories?

I check that more than I check my personal email. I'm not much a computer guy so I don't spend a lot of time on the internet. Which is probably why you posted your e-mail address on a public forum. Beware, bots can get you that way! You might want to edit out your e-mail and just ask for a PM (in w...

Re: Posting 450s from winning / semi-Fi / published stories?

I guess you'd have ask KD why it went so far. I did a reread of it and it seemed that all I could see were the mistakes I made, a few misspellings or a missed period or a paragraph I would write differently. I will be honest and say that a semi-finalist is exactly what I wanted for this story. I fel...
