Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

You know, I really needed to hear that. I am full of feeling that there was some mistake and I'll never be able to write a story that good again. Full up to the brim with self doubt. So thank you. This helps me to hear. Want to know a secret? That's exactly how I felt after my first non-winning-fin...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

We've got four finalists here on the forum, right? So sadly there will be at least one not-winner. That "you didn't make it" phone call sucks . Every time, it sucks. Way worse than a form R. It's like getting kicked in the stomach. But it's ok. You hang up the phone, you take a deep breath...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

This is a great discussion. I am soaking it in. Hopefully it will help me whip my WIP into shape. Any sage advice on endings? Yep! Let me pull out my little black notebook that I took during the workshop! Ok, so you want to make the readers cry. Or at least have an emotional response because some o...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

I was just talking to my writing group about conflict last night and used Matt's opener as an example - not even the machine breaking. The first paragraph where Anna has her feet in a bucket of cold water and is miserable. That's conflict right there. Why is she suffering like this? I need to know. ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

For a WOTF story: Start with character and conflict right there on the first page. Make sure you engage the reader's senses, as many as possible, and build the most vivid world you possibly can. Make the character's problems escalate from the first page onward. It's ok to switch the conflict - Annie...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

Oh, yeah. I got that email. I know I made the first cut at least. This is the twitchiest Thursday I've ever had. The worst thing is, my phone rang an hour ago. Unknown number. A woman's voice on the other end of the line... Trying to scam my credit card info. wotf23 I guess I should give it until n...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

What's the history behind this Thursday angst? Do calls usually go out to just finalists on Thursdays? Or rejection emails? Or both? Is it possible that finalists have already heard but have been sworn to silence? Just wondering. Excuse my ignorance. "Thursday" is a forum joke. It does SE...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

Only finalists get phonecalls (from an "Unknown" number, so don't answer in your Arnold Schwarzenegger voice). Everyone else can expect an email. Finalist calls usually go out around the same time as the semis but in some cases - like Q4 last year - it may be weeks later.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

The context was "maybe even by Thursday", definitely by this weekend. So it could easily be next week before we all get our results.

Thursday? Really, he said the sacred word? Twitching commenced. Thanks KD. No really, thanks. wotf011 Sure thing! I happened to be in the same vanload back to the airport (which was awesome) and during our conversation I mentioned how I'm on the forum and I knew people would want to know. Good luck...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

Everyone waiting for results probably got the same email, which came through this afternoon I got that email, but The Grinder is showing two rejections, so I am thinking there were some Rs sent out as well. Good chance those of us still in are to be HMs. I will seriously be amused if I make Finalis...

I actually find I reference Galaxy Quest as much or more than Holy Grail. For whatever reason it tends to be more relevant to the sort of situations I find myself in.

Just a reminder that the contest folks are gearing up for the big gala which will be April 10th. I could see maybe getting a small wave of rejections before then but certainly not finalists.

Re: Story Titling

Honestly I doubt it makes that much of a difference. If it's exceptionally derivative ("The Starving Games", "The Boss of The Bracelets") you might get an eyeroll. I'm a fan of short titles if possible, one or two words that describe the story briefly. My last finalist I titled w...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

This is a question directed at those forumites who are statistically inclined. I have just completed my rewrite of my 3rd quarter HM story with every intension of submitting it elsewhere, when I thought "Why, not resubmit it to the contest?". At this stage I think I can assume that Dave a...
