Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

Best of luck to our finalists - hope that three of you get Happy Joni Voice today! I just hope it really is Thursday. It could be that Thursday, like the cake, is a lie. Luck, folks! Thursday is dead. Long live Thursday. Ack! I was twitching for you all day yesterday. I really hope Joni comes throu...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 33

Crit group ran through my piece tonight. They totally nailed the symptoms of what's wrong, letting me see the issue. It's big enough I have to think about how to fix it. Probably by adding more words, I do have some room though.

Thanks guys!

I got to do a signing today with fellow winner Christoph Weber. We sold about 34 books! It was fantastic and I really appreciate Barnes and Noble, and Galaxy Press, setting it up for us. Who'd have thought I'd get a bookstore signing at this point in my career?

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

You know, I really needed to hear that. I am full of feeling that there was some mistake and I'll never be able to write a story that good again. Full up to the brim with self doubt. So thank you. This helps me to hear. Want to know a secret? That's exactly how I felt after my first non-winning-fin...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

We've got four finalists here on the forum, right? So sadly there will be at least one not-winner. That "you didn't make it" phone call sucks . Every time, it sucks. Way worse than a form R. It's like getting kicked in the stomach. But it's ok. You hang up the phone, you take a deep breath...

Re: WOTF 32 Anthology Book Club

My story clocked in at 14,900 words, FYI. I totally agree about the titles. Pick something evocative, something that has some rhythm to it. Easier said than done! I am terrible at titles. "Swords" worked on the "pick a random line from your story that has some oomph to it" princi...

I'd be happy to participate! I think you'd want to start another thread with a title warning that there could be spoilers, and then just go through discussing the stories.

On the off-chance any of y'all are in the Reno NV area, volume 32 winner Christoph Weber and I have a signing at the Reno B&N on Saturday May 21st, and we'd love to have other writers show up! I believe some of the other authors are also having signings that weekend - I know several authors liv...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

I was just talking to my writing group about conflict last night and used Matt's opener as an example - not even the machine breaking. The first paragraph where Anna has her feet in a bucket of cold water and is miserable. That's conflict right there. Why is she suffering like this? I need to know. ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 33

For a WOTF story: Start with character and conflict right there on the first page. Make sure you engage the reader's senses, as many as possible, and build the most vivid world you possibly can. Make the character's problems escalate from the first page onward. It's ok to switch the conflict - Annie...

Well thank you, OldDarth! It was almost 15,000 words long and novellas start somewhere around 17.5 - so yes, it was almost a novella! Technically it's a novelette. (Not sure why there are all these categories for story lengths, anyway...) Hope you'll post a review on Amazon or Goodreaders or some ot...

Here's a question that may have been covered elsewhere but for everyone who made it into this volume - did you receive any feedback on your story and/or were given suggested edits/changes? We did! Can't speak to anyone else, but my changes were fairly small - word choice, a few repeated tics I have...

Presumably about 7 out of 10 entries start with someone who's already awake. Now is that a cliche or what? wotf002 So... you were being funny.... but from what I gather, a significant quantity of stories don't start with "someone" at all, but with a location shot or a description of a roc...
