Re: Contest Questions

If you're worried about grammar, I would personally recommend checking out Dreyer's English. It's written by the chief copy editor of Random House, and it's both educational and entertaining (at least, it was to me personally). If you don't want to buy it, you can probably find it at your local lib...

I have read several stories that used this technique. It is common enough and useful enough that I consider it a tool, not a lazy gimmick. But I do not know if WotF judges have different views.

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

That's just it. The stuff I'm debating isn't necessary to the development of the plot but it is to the character and setting and since the setting changes halfway, any set-up /description needs to be given in the first half. With all the recent forum exchanges about beginnings, I'm looking twice as...

Good luck on fleshing it out. You've still got a little more than a month. I'm trying to tighten the beginning of mine. It's too long, but I'm having difficulty choosing what parts to trim off in order to not lose the story's essence and light humor. Can some of the necessary information be sprinkl...

Re: Over-thinkers Anonymous

Like orbivillein said, my stories often wonder when I do not have the core or essential idea nailed down. If I have that (I usually have to meander a lot before I find it) But once I have it, I can measure all deviations against it to see if they hold up to the original idea or change it.

Re: Over-thinkers Anonymous

This is a relentless issue for me. I asked Dave F. about it, and he said (I am paraphrasing) that I needed ask myself if making the change just to changed the story or if it made the story better. Otherwise, I was caught in a continuous loop.

Good Luck, I am still fighting this battle.

The personal reasons we each write is an interesting topic. Just not this topic.
I respectfully ask that we each break out new threads for additional topics.

As I mentioned above, I attempted my first Flash yesterday. The rough sketch of it is already 460 words. So, I'm not sure if it will remain Flash when I flesh it out. But it is Fresh, and the idea intrigues me. Plus, it seems more WotF than my other idea.

Good Luck my friends!

Work on your flash. You can do a flash in a day easy. Use it as a warmup excercise before going to your novel. This sounds like a workable strategy. I continue writing, gaining speed AND a daily warm up routine before the novel edits. All right Mr. Moon. Today's the day. I'm giving flash a try as a...

Re: Contest Questions

Another concern of mine is that if I enter and excerpt of a novel I haven’t finished yet, would I be able to publish the novel later on? Also, should I state in the title that it is an excerpt for the sake of future publication? I'll take a stab at this one. I have read that Patrick Rothfuss turned...
