Re: Story Titling

My titles tend to make more sense after finishing the story. They also usually have to do with the ending. Like, "Ah, that title makes sense now." Not sure that's the best idea, but the intent is for it to be a mental bonus that adds to the story after its been read. Personally speaking, ...

Re: Story Titling

I have a mental block: without a title, I can't start writing. Oh, I might jot down a couple of paragraphs; but by the time I hit the Save button for the first time, I have to have a title. I'll sit there for hours until it comes to me. I generally like short titles. Four words make a long title fo...

Re: Five Minute Rant

You know what, it might be an interesting exercise one day to see if I can write a story to one of those random titles. Assuming I have any time left by the time I've gotten through my current list of ideas, of course... But you never know. Maybe The Thoughts's Waves is my Hugo nominee in waiting! A...

Re: Five Minute Rant

Argh! Why can I write a 7,000 word story that I'm in love with, but can't come up with two or three words for a title that I don't despise? Someone should start a service where you can send them a story, and they'll come up with an awesome title for it. I would be their best customer. Stop trying t...

Re: Success!

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a success here, but I'm pretty excited. I got my first personal rejection today from Scott Andrews over at Beneath Ceaseless Skies. It was for the story I got the HM here in Q3. I know it's still a rejection, but it was definitely not a form one! It feels really en...

Re: Success!

Congrats to all of those making sales, I promise I'm not deeply envious or anything. It's ok, though, my next rejection will be my 50th! I'll hold a party. A sad, crushing party for myself and my failure. We'll have sausage rolls and fizzy pop! That story was heartbreaking by the way, hlf . The part...

Re: Five Minute Rant

This one was a year old, so really shouldn't get to me (I wrote a contest winning story in the intervening gap, after all!), but I was certain one of Nature, DSF or FFO would find it a perfect fit, and, well, no, evidently not. It's the frustration at misunderstanding a market so thoroughly as much ...

Re: Five Minute Rant

I'm normally pretty good with rejections, but this one got to me. I've won a quarter here! My writing is Good Enough! Things are on the up for me! So when I have a story that I _know_ is a perfect fit for a market, and I get excited to send it in because _this will be the one_, it's a good concept, ...

Re: Crossed Genres

Curses! I liked the way they went about things. I once found myself with the perfect story for one of their themes--an android story with a gay protagonist--and had to decide between submitting to them or entering it here. It was the best story I'd written to that point, and I really, really wanted ...

Re: Story Titling

The way I see it, a title can do three things. I will illustrate with random examples from the bookshelf to my right. 1) It can set the tone: "Smoke and Mirrors", "Fragile Things" 2) It can summarise the story: "Harry Potter & the Thing of Whatever", "Memoirs o...

Well it's form--because I just got the exact same email :) as to whether it's a genuine sign of encouragement, well, we need some brave soul to cop to getting something worse before we know that, I suppose.

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Probably long overdue for me to sign up here. Hi! I'm Matt. In August 2012 I thought two foolish things: * "I'm really broke this month. I know, I should sell some fiction! That'll help with money." * "I've got some really good stuff already. It'll sell straight away! The world will b...
