Re: Contest Questions

So I was racing against the clock last night to upload my entry to the contest... 1. How do I know that the submission went in for the quarter ending March 31? I couldn't find submission cutoff times (eastern v pacific). 2. I woke up in the middle of the night realizing that I didn't double space t...

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

Someone here said something about how SHMs were in the best possible position to take the leap to the F/Winner category. The reasoning was something along the lines of: A SHM was one of the last few that didn't make the cut to SF, so you know it was a really good story, but it was missing... somethi...

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

Other people have noted that anything short of winning or a published finalist is a rejection. If you think of WotF less of a contest with contest results, and more of an annual anthology that you are hoping to be included in, then anything but the stories that end up in the anthology are "reje...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

This is off-topic I realize, but I got my copy of WotF Volume 34 from Amazon today. I pre-ordered it a couple of weeks ago, but the site says the book will be released on April 10th, so I wasn't expecting it this soon. I also checked Galaxy Press's website and it also says the book will be released...

I'd say having too many stories is a high quality problem. Start submitting them! Here, there, everywhere. I haven't tried submitting to any other contests, got any recommendations? Not contests, but check out https://thegrinder.diabolicalplots.com/ It's a database of fiction markets. Tool around i...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Another question. The website wasn't working when I submitted, so I had to do hard copy... Does that mean I'll be notified of results by snail mail? The wait is killing me already even though I'm pretty chill and patient in the real world. You regulars are both helpful and hyping things to an unhea...

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

Dang, I have three stories to pick between before march ends. Then two more in my head I want to get out asap. Oh and a trashy rough draft from last summer I never got around to letting anyone critique. I have a hard time being faithful to a story. I get obsessed with an idea but once it's written ...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Just got an interesting personal from Podcastle: For the most part I like this story. My main problem is its slight tendency to over-explain things, which spoils the pacing for me. In particular, I think you could stand to trust the reader to infer a little more of Cers internal state, rather than ...

Vol. 34 (2018) -- Anthology, Workshop, & Gala

Hey all, thought I'd kick off a thread here with the cover of the anthology, which is predictably awesome, no? Also, they forwarded me a .pdf eARC of the Q4 winners' stories. If anyone wants to read them, all they have to do is agree to post a review on Amazon/goodreads/bookseller-of-choice. Send me...

I also have a previously written story in reserve as a backup, although that a) probably won't go anywhere and b) seems like cheating. To me, this sounds less like cheating and more like insurance! It feels like cheating because a) my writer's brain claims I should have it out somewhere else and b)...

Wordpress seems the consensus recommendation. So... here we go: www.jonficke.wordpress.com it is.

I will say that so far it's both super intuitive, and super... um... not. I had to google how to edit links away from defaults, create tags. I'm sure I just need to get used to it.

Just finished another round of rewrites. Looks like I'm going to make it for Q1 after all, although this isn't the story I had originally intended to submit. This one is coming in just shy of 2300 words though and that concerns me. Is that too short for the contest? Should I add some more depth and...
