Re: How Short Is Too Short?

I believe KD Wentworth's story was the shortest win at 2k. Wow. I get the impression that you're the WOTF Anthology guru. Out of curiosity, how many volumes have you read? Legend tells that Dustin was there at the dawn of WOTF, long before the first winners walked the earth. His knowledge is vast, ...

Re: Success!

I signed the contract and the editor said it was safe to share, so here we go: Mad Scientist Journal put out a call for classified ads and are planning to publish my submission in March 2018. It's a 180ish word fictional classified ad, so I'm not sure if that falls into flash or an even smaller cat...

Re: Success!

So, being rather new to this (read: completely new to this), when is it appropriate to post about sales? When ink is dried on a contract? When a publication date is set? Something else entirely? Also, what if the market isn't a pro market? I've heard at least one person give the advice not to even ...

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?

I just finished "Senlin Ascends," by Josiah Bancroft. A really cool, very weird steam-punk story involving the Tower of Babel. Probably the best self-published book I've read. I definitely recommend it! I need to look for it, but I may have seen it someplace. It's quite good. It took me a...

Re: Anthropomorphic Aliens and Creatures

Anthropomorphization is pretty common, actually. The already-mentioned Chanur, the Kzinti from the Known Space books, the Gorn from Star Trek, and so on. Here's an article to check out: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SlidingScaleOfAnthropomorphism WARNING: TvTropes is rightly known as th...

I'm so excited I finally get to post in here. My Heroic Fantasy submission to Flame Tree Publishing got picked up for publication! I found out about three weeks ago, but they asked me to keep quiet until they made official announcements. http://blog.flametreepublishing.com/fantasy-gothic/gothic-fan...

Re: What's Your Short Story Writing Process?

I am a hardcore discovery writer. My outlines never pan out to the point of being totally useless. For most projects I start out with an idea for a specific scene. I then unpack everything about that scene; who are the people taking part in it, where are they, what are they doing, what do they want ...

Jeremyteg, yes that one wotf007 (where we submitted by Dec 2016).

How exciting! Joni seemed to think we would be hearing final results for the quarter relatively soon compared to previous years. Best of luck! Hopefully we get to meet in LA!

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hi everyone, another newbie here - first sub was Q4 2016, which I just found out made finalist! *faints* I'm pretty certain this was just beginner's luck though since after poking around on this site I found out that flash pieces are a tough sell, and my story was only 1,000 words. Still, feeling t...

Re: Cover Letters

My assumption has always been that placing in Writers of the Future (i.e. getting 1st - 3rd place in a given quarter) or being a published finalist would constitute a professional sale, considering you are paid professional rates for publication in the anthology, and would therefore be worth mention...

I hate to resurrect such a long-dead thread, but I can't seem to get the avatar system working. I've tried linking to pictures from Twitter, Imgur, and Photobucket. None have worked, even when I enter the dimensions in the appropriate boxes. Is anyone else having this trouble post-update? Thanks!

Hi there! Longtime lurker, excited to finally be able to register! I'm currently on a Silver Honorable Mention streak with four in a row, and two HM's before that. I also just recently made my first pro sale to Beneath Ceaseless Skies, which should be coming out in early fall this year. I'm still in...
