Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

I've got a Q3 entry mostly ready to go, but waiting for final Q1 results has thrown a monkey-wrench into my ability to polish it up. Worst case scenario, it's a last-minute less shiny entry.

Re: What's Your Short Story Writing Process?

I am a hardcore discovery writer. My outlines never pan out to the point of being totally useless. For most projects I start out with an idea for a specific scene. I then unpack everything about that scene; who are the people taking part in it, where are they, what are they doing, what do they want ...

Jeremyteg, yes that one wotf007 (where we submitted by Dec 2016).

How exciting! Joni seemed to think we would be hearing final results for the quarter relatively soon compared to previous years. Best of luck! Hopefully we get to meet in LA!

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hi everyone, another newbie here - first sub was Q4 2016, which I just found out made finalist! *faints* I'm pretty certain this was just beginner's luck though since after poking around on this site I found out that flash pieces are a tough sell, and my story was only 1,000 words. Still, feeling t...

This is exactly the problem Dustin was helping me with. I think we're still waiting for Brad to figure it out.

Re: Cover Letters

My assumption has always been that placing in Writers of the Future (i.e. getting 1st - 3rd place in a given quarter) or being a published finalist would constitute a professional sale, considering you are paid professional rates for publication in the anthology, and would therefore be worth mention...

Re: Questions: Scene and chapter-breaks

We are warned that discussing specific story details can result in anything from disqualification due to publication rules to disqualification due to loss of anonymity. So judges might read these pages. But I have not seen them respond to questions. This is a good point. I'm going to delete my comm...

Re: Questions: Scene and chapter-breaks

Do please remember that when the rules say 17,000 words, it doesn't mean 17,000 words as counted by your word processor. DF calculates word count by the printing maxim that a letter page (Courier 12 point) with 1 inch margins top, left and bottom and 1.5 inch margin right gives 250 words. Hence 17,...

Yeah, it is interesting. I feel like the overall story length was a lot longer in last year's anthology. *REST OF COMMENT REDACTED DUE TO PARANOIA ABOUT ANONYMITY*

Re: Avatar Trouble

I hate to resurrect such a long-dead thread, but I can't seem to get the avatar system working. I've tried linking to pictures from Twitter, Imgur, and Photobucket. None have worked, even when I enter the dimensions in the appropriate boxes. Is anyone else having this trouble post-update? Thanks!

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hi there! Longtime lurker, excited to finally be able to register! I'm currently on a Silver Honorable Mention streak with four in a row, and two HM's before that. I also just recently made my first pro sale to Beneath Ceaseless Skies, which should be coming out in early fall this year. I'm still in...
