Re: Success!

My story, The Broken Karwaneer , is now free to read on Beneath Ceaseless Skies! Check it out: http://www.beneath-ceaseless-skies.com/stories/the-broken-karwaneer/ Okay, that was awesome. The setting and characters hold a great deal of depth. I would legitimately love to read a novel set in that wo...

I got SECOND PLACE! *happy dance* If I understand correctly, that removes me as a contender for the Golden Pen, which means I can officially stop twitching and kick back until April. wotf010 wotf010 wotf010 Congrats Amy! Re: Drafting

I've noticed a lot of people talking about numbered drafts, or saving each edit under a different file name. Since I started writing, I've just kind of edited as I went, changing things piecemeal based on notes I made to myself while thinking about the story or with deliberate beginning-to-end and ...

Re: Writing Room/Office/Space

EDIT: I lied. I also need a view outside like most folks have mentioned. I live out on an old farm, so the vistas are quite stunning. Just staring out the back door for 10-15 minutes is usually enough to get me back to my desk. I am super envious! I work so much better when I can take brain breaks ...

Re: Writing Room/Office/Space

I have a desk by the door in the living room of the apartment my wife and I are living in while I finish my Masters. She is also an artist, and her desk is bigger, so she got the tiny second bedroom for her office space. Because we don't have kids it works pretty well for me to use the living room a...

Re: How Short Is Too Short?

I believe KD Wentworth's story was the shortest win at 2k. Wow. I get the impression that you're the WOTF Anthology guru. Out of curiosity, how many volumes have you read? Legend tells that Dustin was there at the dawn of WOTF, long before the first winners walked the earth. His knowledge is vast, ...

Re: Success!

I signed the contract and the editor said it was safe to share, so here we go: Mad Scientist Journal put out a call for classified ads and are planning to publish my submission in March 2018. It's a 180ish word fictional classified ad, so I'm not sure if that falls into flash or an even smaller cat...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

Really!? That gives me hope haha. I finished reading mine and found a "to" instead of "too" and a missing "of". At least I didn't find 10 typos in the manuscript. I am hoping there are no more than 7 typos in my script. I found 5. I was so busy and sleep deprived from ...

So, being rather new to this (read: completely new to this), when is it appropriate to post about sales? When ink is dried on a contract? When a publication date is set? Something else entirely? Re: Jibber Jabber - Q3 - Volume 34

I give myself some time to decompress before starting in again. That sounds like a good plan. I will take a break for a week or two maybe a month at most. I made the mistake of looking at my Q3 manuscript today. There is nothing i can do now but I found a missing "K" from the word "t...

Re: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books You Enjoy?

I just finished "Senlin Ascends," by Josiah Bancroft. A really cool, very weird steam-punk story involving the Tower of Babel. Probably the best self-published book I've read. I definitely recommend it! I need to look for it, but I may have seen it someplace. It's quite good. It took me a...

Thank you. I really appreciate the advice. I had no idea how much the first page mattered until recently. To expand on this, is it imperative that the first sentence be the hook or might it be included within the first paragraph or somewhere in the first page. Imagine the reader to have the attenti...

Anthropomorphization is pretty common, actually. The already-mentioned Chanur, the Kzinti from the Known Space books, the Gorn from Star Trek, and so on. Here's an article to check out: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SlidingScaleOfAnthropomorphism WARNING: TvTropes is rightly known as th...
