Re: Word Counts

I always go from the first word to the last word, without header or title, then work out how many # section breaks there are and subtract it, because I can't bring myself to be vague and approximate. But nearly every market just asks for "rounded to the nearest 100", so it doesn't really ...

Thanks Rebecca! I macheted it up a bit in response to Morgan's stellar feedback, so it's a bit over 2,000 words now. I'll PM you.

Short Fast Q4 Exchange

I have a 1500 word story I'd like another set of eyes on, with say a one week turnaround so I can still get it submitted this quarter. If you've got a short piece and can get some general impressions back quick, I'd be happy to swap!

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

Joni Labaqui here from the Writers of the Future contest with some good news. You are still in the running for the 3rd Quarter. Your story made it through the "first pass", meaning you will be judged now by our coordinating judge, David Farland. But I also wanted let you know that you shou...

Did Joni say that in your "still in the running" email???

Just got mine too, and it said the same thing. Weird quarter. wotf017

I'm in the same boat. No "first pass" email, no R, yet....

Re: Can I plagiarize my own material?

Scalables is the publication business model principle of resales and optional subsidiary rights placements, as much a facet for writers' considerations as publishers and agents'. Digest reprints and book anthologies might earn and, therefore, pay more than a first-publication sale. Might not. Short...

Re: Can I plagiarize my own material?

I think the pay rates might be another consideration for short fiction. Even if you have the rights back already or only published on your blog, if you sell a story with that material in it you're technically reprinting it. You could make the argument that it's a new piece of work, but some editors ...

Re: All countdown stories

I was just reading Deep Magic's guidelines and saw they listed it as one of their top 3 problems a couple of years ago, so it must be fairly common: https://www.eschlerediting.com/top-three-short-story-mistakes/ For me, it's usually just laziness. You get through the climax and get to what seems lik...

If you look at the 237 pending responses, they're showing a mean of 41 days, median of 44. So six weeks might be optimistic. wotf012

In my case, at least, It's probably because I send them in bunches. wotf019 I used to jump on the computer as soon as I got a rejection and send it somewhere else, but I don't always have time for that these days, so I'll usually end up collecting and then sending out again about three at a time. Silver Honorable Mention Crits

I've been following the "What's a Silver Honorable Mention..." thread over on the Contest board, and the discussion about SHMs being well positioned to be revised into finalists made me want to blow the dust off mine from a few quarters ago. I did a pretty thorough revision back then and s...

Re: Submitting Honorable Mentions To Magazines

Dave says he gives HMs for 4 reasons (http://davidfarland.com/2017/05/got-honorable-mention/): 1.) Idea isn't fresh or interesting; 2.) Execution is off; 3.) Plotting problems; 4.) Missing elements. These are going to remain problems wherever you submit, so you might want to take a hard look and fig...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hi everyone, I'm also a year+ lurker (long observing the irony of a new writer forum that doesn't allow new members...), so it's exciting to finally be able to participate. My first sub was Q2 last year, and I've gotten an HM, SHM, and R so far. I'm still in Q1 2017 and subbed to Q2. Happy to be in ...
