Another question; this time about story inspiration and focus

I'll try to be succinct, but I'm thinking with my fingertips to an extent here so grant me patience wotf001 Quite often, I'll have an inspiration for a story, an "idea". Well, these are always perfect and exciting. Naturally, once I start writing the darn thing, it's not so perfect anymore...

Re: Middle of the Night Writing

I have so many notes in google keep of random ideas, characters, settings, what have you. Brandon Sanderson mentioned in one of the Writing Excuses episodes that he has a file on his computer called "Cool Stuff I have to Use" or something along those lines- my google keep is essentially th...

Above and elsewhere it’s been discussed that an HM is essentially a rejection, though, and that putting it in a cover letter is not recommended.

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

Makes sense. Would you only use it for that story specifically or would you put it in all your letters? ie "My story, X, was a finalist for Writers of the Future." I would guess not, because it isn't a publishing credit?

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

So if we don't see first results this week, I think we won't see them till mid-to-late April. The workshop week and Gala are coming right up, and everything will be swamped. This is always the long quarter. Get your Q2s in! I really hope we get the wave today! I’ve always been notified mid-afternoo...

At what level of WotF rejection would it be acceptable to put it in the cover letter? Finalist?

Re: Personal Rejections & Subsequent Submissions

Thanks, that was kind of my thinking. Thanks for the point that the story that matters is the one you're submitting, not any you've written in the past. It's just nice when they give feedback and say, "I hope you'll try us again," and for some reason I was thinking I should respond to that...

Personal Rejections & Subsequent Submissions

I've gotten personal rejections from a few places, but I'm still chasing that first sale. When I submit a story to a publication I've gotten a personal from in the past, should I change my cover letter at all? Or do you just trust that when they said they wanted you to try again, they'll remember? T...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

Paper submissions tend to come out in the last wave. If you included email you'll get the results that way but it takes time to sort it out. I did my first sub that way. So when the first wave comes out - typically all rejections - you have to wait to know if it's an honorable mention or higher or a...

These are all great. Never self-rejecting is a huge one. Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing submitting to pro magazines at all, but if I’d never taken the chance, how would I know they wouldn’t buy it? Besides, by starting at the top, someday I WILL get a sale there. Same with WoTF. My Q4 last year w...

Got what I’m calling a second tier rejection from Analg today, after over 100 days. I was invited to resubmit with something else, so I’m calling it a win! For a bare novice like me, the little signs are really encouraging.

Rules of Writing

I was poking around and stumbled on Heinlein's Rules of Writing. I reread them occasionally, and have a handwritten version on one of my notebooks. (If you haven't read them http://sfwriter.com/ow05.htm is a link) Got me thinking, what kinds of rules and guidelines do you folks use? I have Heinlein'...

I asked a similar question recently (retellings is the thread name) and the general consensus was that while it might be a hard sell for various reasons, anything can work if it’s done well enough. I personally decided to set aside my retelling idea in favor of something else.

FWIW he sends that blog out every quarter (that I've been subscribed to the emails) around the end of the judging period. I'm not sure it always indicates he's almost done.
