Please do not hesitate to call upon me for any help I may be able to provide. I'll be around and about, hoping to maintain contact with all of you who've helped s...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Somehow knowing he has his list down to 21 is more terrifying than just waiting for the email haha. There is no way mine is in that stack. I can't picture it. I wonder how many in that pile are from the forums though. Thanks for the update, it's nice that Dave shares news at conferences. I'm in exa...

Re: The Empathy Problem

Great post. I often think back to Acquisition, the winner of the Golden Pen award from last year. There were two characters, three I suppose, and no "life threatening" peril, not really, for the MC but it is one of the more intense stories I've ever read. I think the reason why is because ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

While my story has been through a number of readers already, I am also available for swaps. I learn so much from critiquing, and my story gets stronger with every person's feedback, I don't mind at all. I usually respond within a week but with NaNo and the holidays coming up, ymmv. Send me a PM if y...

In one of his blog posts, DF talks about how he hates to hit "the reject button" so there is a digital system. Also, entries that encountered difficulties with the submissions system in the past have been emailed to Joni, who then prints them off and gives them to DF with the paper submiss...

Last year was earlier than usual, like mid October for the first wave. The year before that it was December before the finalists heard I believe. I’m unable to suppress the twitching but rationally Peony is probably right.

Re: Form vs Personal Rejection

That second one sounds like a higher tier form rejection to me. There's a rejection wiki if you google it- most of the form responses were on there. On the two personals I've gotten, it was obvious it was a personal rejection. In the first, because the editor explicitly stated so and in the second b...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hello all, I've been a fan of the contest for a few years. Just started submitting Q3 of this year and I put in another story for Q4. Great to have these forums as a resource/outlet. I received a confirmation email saying I was successfully entered in the contest for Q3 (and Q4) but I have yet to r...

Re: Go for the novel? Or stick with the short story?

I had this idea for a novel, so I started writing in January. I wrote 40k words or something like that and then realized I had no idea what I was doing. The more I read blogs and articles on writing, the more I ran into concepts that I didn't really understand. Character arc? Setting? Rising action?...

Ishmael, your determination is certainly an inspiration! A friend asked me the other day when I would stop trying to “make it” if it didn’t work out. My response was to channel Galaxy Quest. Never Give Up, Never Surrender! That being said, I have a question in the vein of submitting four stories in ...

Re: Why Do You Write?

I started writing because I had a story in my head, and, I've always wanted to be a writer. I kept writing because I discovered that I love the process- from creating to critiquing. Except query letters. That sucked. I agree with DisgruntledPeony. That question is a no-win. I'd settle for my stories...

Swampmates

I started querying agents for my novel this week and this tip was just what I needed to hear. As well as encouraging me, it prompted me to thank everyone around here who has offered a friendly helping hand as I begin to navigate the swamp. I'm still just a greenhorn, puttering along with my polished...

I’m on my fourth quarter for the contest and the titles get easier every time. I try to go for something that is both a hook that entices the reader to be curious about what I’m getting at and that, upon finishing the story, will have some kind of deeper meaning. I just renamed my Q3 sub to put it o...

Got a personal rejection from F&SF last night. That’s pretty delightful, for me. I got a form rejection from them a few months ago on a different story. I still want that first sale, of course, but like you guys said, this means I’m on the right track. Just keep writing, finishing, and submitting!
