Re: writing books

I really enjoyed Scene and Sequel by Jack Bickham and On Writing by Steven King. I also listen to a number of writing podcasts that help me think about my writing in different ways.

Re: Where do you get your inspiration?

My stories come from collisions of ideas. I usually picture a character, with some background ideas, and they sit in an empty room until another idea joins the space, a setting or a conflict that interests me. I bring them together to write my stories. The Writing Excuses podcast discussed a similar...

Re: Rejection

Thanks to all. Kent, I appreciate the article. I suspect the opening is where I failed most. Maybe I need to cut that opening scene entirely, and just imply the information provided there to get to the meat of the story quicker.

Rejection

Hi folks. I am hoping to get some fresh eyes on my Q2 rejection. I didn’t take the rejection well and every time I open the document I want to delete every other word. Before I send it out on sub I’d really like some feedback about why maybe it didn’t work. I really believe in this story and want it...

Re: Do you resubmit?

For me personally I always start fresh (so far, I don't have Preston's impressive history of submissions though) because I always have "the next one" swimming around in my mind while I'm working on the current one. I know several people have resubmitted HMs and Rs, with varying results.

Held for consideration

A story of mine is being held for consideration by a magazine (Yay!) Probably a silly question but do I reply to the email or just sit and wait for further instruction? Thanks.

It can be either. Recommend getting ahold of the recent years anthologies- they give the best sense of what the judges look for.

I'm in. Hit submit tonight. I am reliably informed that this story is awesome. I expect an R. wotf004 Funny how that goes. My Q2 has the most hopes riding on it of any story I've written thus far, but it all depends on the subjective take of the judge. wotf017 Best cure is to write something even b...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 35

My Q3 is ready (Ish. Sorta. Kinda. Maybe) for readers if anyone has time to take a look. I'm hoping to submit before the third week of June as I have a conference at the end of the month where I'm theoretically pitching my novel to agents and need ample time to twitch and polish for that. I'm always...
