Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Welcome, Ayman! You're going to love it here. Plenty of time for you to whip a story into shape before the end of year deadline for Q1. ~Morgan I am expecting my first baby in December so seems unlikely but who knows, maybe it will turn out to be a saint and I will have all the time I need to get i...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

While my story has been through a number of readers already, I am also available for swaps. I learn so much from critiquing, and my story gets stronger with every person's feedback, I don't mind at all. I usually respond within a week but with NaNo and the holidays coming up, ymmv. Send me a PM if y...

Re: Form vs Personal Rejection

That second one sounds like a higher tier form rejection to me. There's a rejection wiki if you google it- most of the form responses were on there. On the two personals I've gotten, it was obvious it was a personal rejection. In the first, because the editor explicitly stated so and in the second b...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Hello all, I've been a fan of the contest for a few years. Just started submitting Q3 of this year and I put in another story for Q4. Great to have these forums as a resource/outlet. I received a confirmation email saying I was successfully entered in the contest for Q3 (and Q4) but I have yet to r...

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Ishmael, your determination is certainly an inspiration! A friend asked me the other day when I would stop trying to “make it” if it didn’t work out. My response was to channel Galaxy Quest. Never Give Up, Never Surrender! That being said, I have a question in the vein of submitting four stories in ...

Re: Why Do You Write?

I started writing because I had a story in my head, and, I've always wanted to be a writer. I kept writing because I discovered that I love the process- from creating to critiquing. Except query letters. That sucked. I agree with DisgruntledPeony. That question is a no-win. I'd settle for my stories...

Thank you! It took a lot of explaining for my husband to understand why I was so excited about this rejection! I’m trying to work on the story based on the feedback I got, and will submit elsewhere.

I wasn’t excited about mine until yesterday when I finally started to get into the setting and the characters. I took Dave’s recent blog with the seven elements he looks for and taped it over my desk. I started much earlier this quarter! I should be open for a swap in a week or so if anyone is inte...

Re: Story Titling

I’m on my fourth quarter for the contest and the titles get easier every time. I try to go for something that is both a hook that entices the reader to be curious about what I’m getting at and that, upon finishing the story, will have some kind of deeper meaning. I just renamed my Q3 sub to put it o...

Got a personal rejection from F&SF last night. That’s pretty delightful, for me. I got a form rejection from them a few months ago on a different story. I still want that first sale, of course, but like you guys said, this means I’m on the right track. Just keep writing, finishing, and submitting!

Re: Angry Robot Open Sub Period Nov 1st - Dec 31st

As a relative newcomer to the writing world, I thought it was better to have an agent first? I’m confused by this whole thing, like where they say they wouldn’t mind if, after acceptance, you went looking for an agent. Doesn’t the agent finding process take months, at best? Would this be a smart mov...

Likewise. I had a brain flash last night for a setting, so now I have work in mind for Q1 and Q2. I’m not one of those people with hundreds of stories pouring out of my head, so this challenge will be really good for my creative juice maker.

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I've sent several stories out to Flash Fiction Online this year. None have been accepted yet, but I've received personal feedback on two of them. In my last one, Suzanne Vincent emailed to say my story made it into the final round of reviews, wasn't selected, but if I was interested, she'd be happy...

Good evening. I'm sure you're all busy tomorrow and I wish you the very best traffic and weather! I'm in Nebraska and am so excited. I would be happy to provide my (admittedly amateur) insight on anything from 450 on up. I've found that critiquing is a great way to strengthen my own writing, and I like to help. I've been doing critters for a few weeks and I really enjoy it. I am not working on a Q3 story- I've got a few ideas but...
