Re: Story Titling

I HATE HATE HATE the title of my current story -- but was going to just ignore it and submit - but this discussion has been an inspiration -- I've already come up something better -- it can still use some work but much better than what I had

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

"Just counted my submissions for Writers of the Future. We hit an all-time high again. 20% higher than the previous record, set last quarter.Let the judging, begin . . ." On Dave's facebook page. wotf003 wotf003 wotf003 Ugh! So - more and more competition. Good for the contest I guess. I ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - Volume 35

I'm pretty excited about my story for Q1. It, and a bunch of ideas, came to me in June while I was still flying high from the HM. It's pretty out there though - so not sure if it's a great story or just a silly idea. I hope to be submitting it to my writer's group in a couple weeks - so will see wha...

Age Limit?

Is there a minimum age limit? I have a relative who is 14/15 - and he's a great artist. Can he enter the illustrator's contest? Does anyone know of someone his age winning?

Re: What does "win" mean?

And -- can you win more than once? Say - enter Q1, then enter Q2 before the winner is chosen for Q1, and win Q2 as well? Has anyone ever done that?

What does "win" mean?

So, the rule is that once you "win" you can't enter again. But what does "win" mean? Is that first place? Or first, second, third place?

Re: Four in Thirty-Five (4 in 35!)

Sounds good -- I've got one about ready for Q1, a good beginning for Q2, an decent idea for Q3, and if nothing better comes to mind I can finish reworking my HM for Q4.

Contest Results

What are all the possible contest results? I see lots of people with SHM - what is that? I think I've seen others that I don't know what they mean. And is R reject? If you don't win anything do you get a reject, or does that mean your entry didn't meet the requirements?

Re: "We regret that we cannot accept children's stories." Define "children!"

I was thinking about this. First, just because a book is about children doesn't mean it's a children's book. Second, if it's really good, and it's not a picture book or something clearly for very young children, I'd go for it. I just can't imagine them disqualifying something like Ender's Game, for ...

Submitting Honorable Mentions To Magazines

Would it be safe to assume getting an honorable mention increases the odds of getting that story published somewhere? Are there any publications you know of that seem to especially like stories that get an honorable mention? Thanks -

How Long To Get The Certificate?

So, I got an email on July 7 saying I got an honorable mention for Q2 2017. This really got me motivated as it's the strongest positive feedback that I've ever gotten on my writing, and I'm back to writing again! I'm kind of excited to get the certificate - and was wondering about how long does it u...

How Short Is Too Short?

Any thoughts on how short would be too short for the contest? Any one know of any really short stories that have won? Say, about 2,000-3,000 words?

Re: "We regret that we cannot accept children's stories." Define "children!"

Funny - I was just wondering this myself. I have some fantasy picture book type stories that I've written for my children which I'm sure would not be acceptable. I've played with the idea of combining them into full book length, but I'm guessing they'd still be unacceptable. But how about, say, The ...

Surprise Endings

So I love having surprise endings on my stories. But, then there's always that struggle with giving enough information so that the end seems inevitable - in hindsight - but not giving so much as to have the surprise come too soon. This is especially difficult given the wide range of potential reader...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Howdy: I'm Chris. I recently learned I got an Honorable Mention in the Q2 2017 contest! That's really got me stoked!! Someone in the Facebook Fantasy & Science Fiction Writers group suggested I join this group, so I did. I'm actually at work just now so can't hang out but I'm looking forward to ...
