Finished reading the stories. No sex this time or any references to sex (unless I missed something).

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

I have a question regarding these things, and if it's been answered somewhere then feel free to give me the hose again. If you get an R on a technicality, is there any way to know this? This might be completely wishful thinking, but I recently became aware of the Microsoft Word meta data it include...

Get Notification of Submission Openings?

Is there a way to get notified of submission openings? I figure there must be. I think SFWA does something but I haven't found what I imagined I saw a while back.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Last night I felt pretty devastated about my R because it was the first story I wrote after the babies were born, but you know what? That story was kind of dark for WotF. It may do better elsewhere. On another note, we gave the babies oat cereal in their bottles for the first time last night and th...

I notice one long-time submitter who has been knocking at the door that has not posted here or in results yet. Hope that means good news for them. Wonder how long we have to way for winner news?

Is Dave's blog the one starting with mydoctor? I can't access the website I guess due to geo-restriction. wotf024 wotf024 Yes. Look at his"writing Tips" link. I'm not sure what "geo-restricting" is but I guess it means you can't access Dave's website from where you are? Wulf's &...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

After 80 days, I heard back from GE: "...We’re overflowing with submissions right now, and so I must be extra-picky. Your* writing is strong, but not quite up to the other pieces I’m passing... Wish I had better news. Good fortune on submitting to another market..." Never made it to Mike'...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Sorry to hear, Chuck. Expected or not, rejections sting. Now I’m twitching. Best of results to all concerned! Thanks. I have to laugh at myself. Knew nothing of the guidelines for my Q1 or Q2. My main character died at the end in my Q1. It was a sacrifice but still a suicide which I now know is a h...

Win this thing! By writing FRESH stories! All the beast, ~Moon~ I didn't even notice the present tense when I read it. Well done. Speaking of fresh stories, what's the scuttlebutt on HRs and SHRs revising their stories and achieving a win or higher placement? They don't get feedback so maybe they w...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Yeah, I think last quarter only took 2 weeks (or less really for the winners. Pretty sure I got my 'not a winner' call AFTER Moon. And how long ago did Dave say his part was done?). BUT that's quarter 4, where everyone is scrambling to get things finished for the anthology and whatnot. Could be. Co...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

It occurred to me last night that, if Dave finished his job last week as he said, they would not wait on Joni to do her thing. They would go ahead with final judging. So we may get the whole kit and caboodle this week, winners and all. I think final judging takes awhile. It was about a month betwee...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

If anyone felt like doing some analysis on the results days over the last few years, though, I for one would be interested! Actually, this is a thing I track (sometimes, my submitomancy goes pretty in-depth!). I don't have it broken down by year, but since V27Q3, which was in 2010 (probably when I ...

Re: How Short Is Too Short?

I'm over 2500 words now on my story. I think it's within Dave's guidelines. I even have three try/fail cycles! Heck, more than three depending on how those are counted. :) It may not be good enough otherwise but it was a step forward. A couple of you guys were a huge help reading it for me. Thanks.

Dave Farland: Just finished my part in judging the first quarter of Writers of the Future. Wow, we got some great stories! Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Remember, if a winner gets disqualified, they pull from the semifinalists. I'm guessing that's why semifinalists are no longer notified with the rest of the crowd. Just curious, but why wouldn't they pull from one of the other finalists? Aren't there like 8 of them? I think this is the time period ...

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Do Rs ever get any feedback? I seemed to recall someone posted that they got an R but Katy liked their opening. (I could have misunderstood-I often do). Only semifinalists get feedback in the form of a critique from the coordinating judge. Because of the critique, it disqualifies the story from bei...

Since my first post, I found a few things that indicate it is fine, particularly where it is clear the character isn't passing it off as his own saying.

Re: Discussion: Q1 Volume 36

Expectomancy! Nice! This is how I think it goes at the moment: 1. Finalists get a phone call. They are asked not to share on the internet yet. 2. The first waves go out on email over a few days - includes R, HM ,SHM. There doesn’t seem to be a clear order or anything. 3. Semi finalists wait a week ...
