Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36

Congrats to all those SHMs and HMs and well done to the Rs too since it means you are writing and submitting. You all make me jealous I didn't have anything in for Q2 so I could be getting a response now - whatever type of response it would be!

That sounds great. I hope your novelization goes well (I have a longish short story that I have similar plans for so hopefully you'll post something about your progress to inspire me to get to work on mine :) )

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

disgruntledpeony That is a LOT of feedback. Sounds like a mixed blessing in this case given the submission history. But good feedback can always help the next story (at least that is what I hope for when I get it). Will you try sending it out to some of the lower paying markets? Or hold onto it for ...

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36

I still believe notices won't happen until the end of the month at the soonest. Cookie, having had enough of the cowboys' merriment, dumped his bucket over the camp fire. Steam, and wet hot ash, splattered those unfortunate enough to be sitting opposite. With a harrumph, Cookie hobbled back to his ...

I can watch with casual disinterestedness (the Jane Austen usage of disinterested) because I have no skin in the game for Q2. I sure wish I'd submitted something so I could be waiting with baited breath like everyone else :)

Thinking about sitting and holding my breath. I have a story being held for consideration with an SFWA eligible market. Got one rejection from them and one hold. Eeek eeek eeeek. Exciting and lots of the mixed feelings. Hoping it will be selected, desperately trying to keep my feet realistically pla...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

I had assumed that it got an honorable mention in the contest previously???? I think that would give me a lot of hope if HMs in the contest stood at least a chance of getting to second round with a big deal like Clarkesworld it'd change my whole outlook on how to proceed with HMs ;)

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I don't think forgiveness is low hanging fruit. I think someone actually able to forgive for something like that has all kinds of depth to it. But I went to a conference where one of the sessions was on forgiveness and our society's tendency to put it up on a pedestal as the be all and end all enlig...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Nice idea, but most publications consider posting to a public forum actual publication. As such, you could not offer first rights--they were used up. Additionally, you might wish to send some of those stories in to WotF. Again, if you've displayed them publicly, it would bring into question how bli...

I submitted to the previous two quarters and have made it my goal to submit something every quarter. I'm also working on a challenge this year of wr...

In other news... Do you have any Reccomendations. I'm looking for publisher for my novelette. It got HM last year in Q3. It's 15600 words. Sci Fi. It's an unorthodox love story set in amidst a futuristic jailbreak. An has a unique mind bender of an ending. Complex and poetic. I'm not fussed about b...

I'll have my Q3 ready to submit tomorrow. nothing left but three and a half months of anxiety and twitching waiting for results. I've got a super great idea for Q4, but have found a rare motivation for a novel that's been on hold for almost a year. I'm pounding out almost 2k words a day. And I'm sc...

Re: Discussion: Q4 Volume 36

I have two stories ready to go. Might give each of them a quick once over before I decide which one to submit. I know some folks advise waiting until later to submit to give more time to work on it - but I am going to turn my attention to either editing one of my novels or writing a new one so there...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Searched for it on Netflix - found out it was on Prime. Damn. I like everything Gaiman writes. Pratchett - not so much. Sheen and Tennant tend to add something to a part. We are opposites. Love Pratchett but Gaiman is very hit or miss for me. But Good Omens is delightful so I guess together is good.

Online Workshop Thread

Would anyone be interested in doing a sort of online informal workshop type of thread together? I was thinking if people were interested we could use a couple of podcasts from Writing Excuses as a basis (Season 10 https://writingexcuses.com/category/season/season-10/). Then share our thoughts and or...

Ideas and characters usually show up somewhere else. I'm a firm believer in recycling. Haha :) Me too actually. TimE hopefully whatever new idea you work on for Q3 will go nice and smooth. And who knows, once that other idea percolates in the back of your brain for a while maybe it will end up almost writing itself at some future date (just with fixes that you don't see right now).

Re: 4 in 36

I wish I had planned around doing this. But I missed submitting anything in Q2 because I hadn't really started participating or giving much thought to how valuable it could be to work with that kind of goal in mind. Besides I had pretty much all my finished stories out on submission at that time. Bu...

I don't think anyone could predict what would happen next in my Q2 entry. I didn't know as I was writing it! But my Q3 ideas are too predictable. Think I need to start again. Predictable delivered in a unique way with characters people care about can work very well (in my opinion at least). I've en...

Re: Discussion: Q3 Volume 36

Is it bad that I just want it to be July so I can enter for Q4 because maybe that would inspire me to get my rear in gear to make sure I have something for next Q1. Although I admit I'd really like it if I could just win Q3 or Q4 then anything after that would just go into the submission rounds :)

Re: Story mentally plotted, but can't get it out

Ursula LeGuin talked about something that comes to my mind with what you said. She said sometimes if it isn't flowing/working it could be an issue with the tense or it could be you are writing 1rst person and you need to be 3rd or vice versa etc. I am almost certainly messing up what she said. But I...
