Re: Q1 Volume 29

To add, even the expedited results don't mean that we'll see who the winners are before the deadline. A person might find that they're a finalist before Dec 31, and then find they didn't win Jan 1. That would suck. The beauty of e-sub is I can make up my mind on Dec. 31, like I did last year. Preac...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

So it's just possible that one might not need to submit for Q1 at all... Not that that will stop me if we get close to deadline and I somehow miraculously am still waiting; but it's a reason I choose to sit back and relax for a while longer. You tempt fate recklessly sir. wotf009 But are you really...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

Assuming I've got the quarters right, and we're in Q1, Vol 29 now (Dec. 31 deadline?), I'll be submitting at the very end of the window. I'm developing 2 or 3 pieces, so I'll take the next few weeks to decide which one to submit right near the deadline. I like to keep my options open. :) I believe ...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

A reject on an idea means the idea has dead ended. After one rejection? Successful writers tell of as many as 50 rejections for a piece which eventually sold. Or more. I guess if you're afraid a Q1 rejection will kill your buzz, that's a reason not to submit. Though I'd rather get an HM for an inco...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

Marina, You could do what I do, which is finish a story, edit it, rewrite it, edit it, rewrite it... So, yeah, I finish early, only I don't finish at all. Got my Q1 back from my alpha yesterday... Complete rewrite coming. :( I may not make Q1 at all. And since I don't have a new idea burning a hole...

Thus we gave the third kid an uncommon name. Which was? Tilo (pronounced tea-low). It's actually a normal name in Germany, and it fits a pattern common to many present-day Dutch names (Benno, Addo, Remco, Timo, etc), yet people here think it's so unusual, sigh. In the US, they just figure it's some...

Re: Loading an avatar picture

Ah, names are funny. My parents couldn't have been more different in their tastes. My mom likes white-bread names and wanted to name me Jessie or Britney. My dad likes flowery names, and he’s never been able to live down the fact that he suggested Ocean-Spray. I had a conversation about names a whi...

No matter how good a writer you are, if you're only writing for yourself and your tastes, that's awesome. You may or may not reach an audience that way, though. There are 7 billion people on the planet. Snowflakes and fingerprints aside, I doubt* anyone ever thought of a story that appealed to only...

Re: Q1 Volume 29

It's less a question of "will I have a story to submit one final time to the contest" and more a question of "do I bother trying to write a story FOR the contest". That's where I'm finding the lack of motivation. I've written two stories out of all my entries that I *knew* fit p...

Anybody watch the Misfits on Hulu? It's a UK show about a group of juveniles sentenced to community service who end up getting super powers... Some how. I'm not very far in, but it's an interesting take on super-hero-ness. (Hint they're not very heroic.)

And since such a small number of markets accept simultaneous submissions (simsubs) for short stories, as a practical matter I treat all markets as "no simsubs". It's also easier for me to track if each story is at just one market at a time. @animartco: For keeping track of which story is ...
