For what it's worth, I was in the hold pile and I have heard exactly nothing about my story. So who knows?

Re: big names

"$15.00 in 1941 had the same buying power as $240.08 in 2012." Lot easier to make a living on fiction back then... what with the rates for stories being almost the same as today and there being many more publications. It's sad, kinda, that I get paid 5 cents a word now and someone selling ...

I could remove a little of the suspense for you all, but I think I'll just let you stew some more instead.

That said, I'd be shocked if we heard anything tomorrow.

Do with this info what you will.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I'm reading mostly romances and thrillers these days. Working my way through Jeffery Deaver's books right now. Finished up all the Alex Cross books by Patterson recently. Almost all the way through Sanford's Prey series as well (17 of the 21 books read so far).

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

KD said that HMs were the top 10-15%... which means that each quarter probably receives 800-1200 entries. KJA's number seems way too high, even for a yearly total.

Can I press 0 for being done? No? Final entry. I'm cursed that this is dragging out so long. I'm not going to win and yet the universe wants me to stay in limbo for as long as possible. Argh.

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I think we all got the same hold email. I know some of the HMs and rejections were from paper submissions, so she'd at least started them. However, I don't think a "hold" means anything more than KD wanted to give those stories another read before she made her final decisions. So, as much ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

I hope that guy didn't actually title his story what he calls it in his blog, because he just disqualified himself probably if he did (great way to kill your anonymity, sigh). Maybe someone should comment over there and tell him so he can delete the title?

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Those acceptances aren't finalists who have been called. Just FYI. I highly doubt calls will be going out for a while judging from the email I got today. Apparently KD hadn't made her final decisions, so it will be up to the new judge, whoever that is, to sort those out. Some of us are in for an eve...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

These percentages are sort of meaningless. One, the number of Honorable Mentions varies. There might be none this quarter (small chance, but still, it could happen). Two, a story that does not fit what the contest wants will always have a 0% chance of winning. A story that is awesome and fits the co...

Re: Brad's in Analog AGAIN...

Why would Brad do that to his writing life? Judging WotF is a huge, involved process that takes a lot of hours. Brad already has a military job, a civilian job, is a writer, and mods the forums. He'd have to be making enough money from the judging gig to replace at least the civ job, I imagine, and ...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Actually, this all started when I said that duotropery wasn't useful. I still don't think it is. Asking "hey, what kind of story got an HM or made finalist here?" can be useful. Asking "hey, when did you submit that story that got rejected?" isn't, in my opinion. That's what I fe...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Fixed my signature. You are right, listing rejections in my sig is silly unless I'm going to list all of them and I don't have the room or patience to count (I'm over 400 and not quite to 500 yet, I think). Being rejected shouldn't give anyone credibility. Saying stuff that makes sense to you should...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29

Who said write in a vacuum? I'm saying don't take ONE editor's opinions to be a measure of where you stack up in general, that's all. And, in my opinion, of course, there are much better ways to improve your craft than hoping for a line or two in a rejection that will tell you what to do. Find good ...
