As the above indicates, I finished without a win this time. Onward to the next quarter. . . .

Re: Brad's in Analog AGAIN...

I somehow missed "The Exchange Officers," but won't let the same happen with "Chaplain's Legacy"--the first Chaplain story was too good. Especially since, if I recall correctly, it'll be your first novella-length work? Too awesome to pass up.

A further update on my story "Zion" which sold to the anthology "For All Eternity: Tales of the Seven Deadly Sins." It is now available at Amazon.com. And I have seen the artwork which goes to the story. And I'm spazzing everywhere If you would like a link to it, it's in the sig...

Very cool. All of Illinois is pretty beautiful, but it's especially true of the Chicagoland area. Talk about the heart of America, far as I'm concerned. Your story's an inspiring one. I've been submitting every quarter for about three years--this is my eleventh consecutive entry, if my count is righ...

Re: Almost Success - The "Mixed Feelings" Thread

Got a personal rejection from John Klima at Electric Velocipede, saying my story was "very well written," and that "I really would love to see more work from you," but that "it was too similar to other stories I've seen along the same lines in the past."

Bummer.

Sorry to hear that, Dantzel. I'm in exactly the same boat. My girlfriend acts that way on a daily basis--including giving me regular "guilt trips" for wanting to write in stead of, say, watch How I Met Your Mother. It's exhausting.

Just After Sunset by King, 20th Century Ghosts by Joe HIll, and anything by Bradbury or Matheson.

Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson is a great one. Also: Stories, ed. Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio, and Gordan Van Gelder's The Very Best of F&SF.

I keep thinking about Codex, but am not sure if my Penumbra sale counts as 'pro' or not, so I haven't tried. Probably should just get off my duff and just ask. wotf004 It should. Just depends on what Luc Reid's (Codex's) opinion is on a particular market. If it pays pro rates, and has been around f...

Answered the first phone call of the day at work, on the first ring, and some deranged Ukrainian-American tooth-and-gum doctor begins shouting about some twenty-dollar charge on he and his daughter's joint checking account. "She's under psychiatric care right now," he says. "I want de...

Scott Lynch is one of several whose fiction I'll be seeking out based solely on how impressive their responses were at various panels. He was hilarious, intelligent, and seemed like a nice, genuine individual.

- Print out the first draft of your novel or story, and mark any spots where you’re able to stop reading, or where you stumble, with post-it notes; keep reading on; then, when you come back to the manuscript to begin a second draft, these sticky notes will show you where polishing or revision is nec...

What I meant was, my second sale to a genre market that pays five cents per word or higher.
