I'm in. Phew. This is the fastest I've written a story of this length. Not sure it's the greatest thing ever, but it feels good to be done.

Re: What's a Silver Honorable Mention as opposed to a regular HM?

In general, you put the best credits you can in your cover letter. So, "I was published in Fantasy and Science Fiction." would be a pretty excellent credit. Most of us don't have that though, so we put "I was published in Cripple Creek Review." or whatever. If you don't have any ...

Re: Contest Questions

1. No, they want only unpublished stories to be entered. That also means you should not submit a story that you self-published or posted to your website, blog, etc. The rule you are referencing is regarding author eligibility. If you publish four or more short stories in pro markets, then you have p...

Re: NEW USERS! INTRODUCE YOURSELVES!

Real name is Amy... I have six kids and basically went 15 years without writing, even though it was a passion middle school and high school. There was a short story I had written in high school, my teacher said I needed to get it published. It sat in a pile of nothing and became lost. I couldn't fi...

Thanks guys. Editorial taste indeed. To quote Matt Dovey from another thread, "Never self reject!" and to quote Robert Heinlein, "Keep sending it out until it sells!" Or in today's world, keep sending it out until you decide to self publish it.

Re: Discussion - Q2 - Volume 35

My story has been outlined but now that it's time to write, I feel all out of sorts. What is a beginning? How do I do this? How have I done this before? Every single time I sit down to write something, I become convinced that I don't know how to write wotf019 Ah well. Enough procrastination. Here I...

Re: Word Counts

I've always assumed it was the body only, but I do not think there is a universal rule that applies to all markets. Also, most markets do not need a level a precision that the extra words of the title, byline, address ,etc. would matter. Usually when such precision does matter, they will specify in ...

This might be jumping the gun a bit, but seeing how a lot of forum members have already turned in their Q4 stories and are working on Q1, I thought I'd start this thread. For Q1 I'm writing a Fantasy. My last three entries have been more science fiction. I love science fiction, love to read it, but...

I don't see why not. I believe DF turned his winning story for this contest into a novel and I'm sure there are plenty of other examples like that one.

Re: Goodbye, Publisher's Word Count!

I went to school with a bunch of folks from the suburbs of Chicago. We always used to joke that all of the suburbs there were a combination of [Geographic Feature] and [Flora]. For example, Cedar Lake, or Oak Lawn. So we started trying to make up our own imaginary Chicago Suburb Names. The best we ...

Re: The editorial process for short fiction

My example is from the other end of the spectrum, too little editing. I had a story published by a fly-by-night operation that has since gone out of business. I submitted by email which, as you might imagine, can change some of the formatting. The editor 1. Posted the story as it appeared in the ema...

Wet blanket note... Mike Resnick likes to point out, "The operative word in 'personal rejection' is 'rejection'." Oh, absolutely. On the one hand, personal rejections can give an author hope because it means they're closer to an acceptance than they might have gotten with a basic rejectio...

Re: Jibber Jabber - Q4 - Volume 34

Dead cat R for me.

I seem to have a negative correlation between expectations and results with this contest. The stories I know will be Rs, get HMs and the ones I think I hit out of the park get Rs. Oh well. Next quarter's story is in my opinion so so, so who knows?

Congrats to the HMs and Silvers.
