Re: Success!

Thanks, all, for the kind words about my story. And since we're talking rejections (in the Success thread? what's wrong with you people!?) I'll let you know that story received 16 rejections and 2 never-made-it-to-pub acceptances before it finally made an appearance. And like amoskalik my first sal...

Aye, 50 rejections is pocket change. wotf007 I had a few super-small microfictive things accepted by markets with embarrassingly high acceptance rates back when I first started, but I didn't net what I consider to be my first real sale until something like rejection #200. Bummer, Aaron!

I'm still in (as flintonlaubakersmith). Last year I got 3rd place, so I'm interested to see if I can best that this time around!

I have a pretty strong English Lit background, though, and the fiction writing rounds tend to trip me up way more than the review rounds do. Eurgh!

Re: Story Titling

I think titles are supremely important--but I may be biased because I love coming up with them. Like Dustin, I feel like the core of the story should be in the title. A great title should also set the tone and at least hint at the genre for a story before you ever even start to read it. I was also t...

Then there's the rejections that come in the 2nd round. You'll get an e-mail that says you've made the 2nd round, so you know someone likes it, even if just a slusher -- then you get a form. Those are rough, I think. Good news, but also bad news, and no news. wotf015 Yeah, Warren seems to use exclu...

Re: Fantastic Stories Rejection Question

Generally speaking at FSI, if you make it past the first reader you will get a notification that you're being passed up to the editor. But (out of 8 submissions) I have received one rejection straight from Warren that said I got past the first reader where I didn't get the bump e-mail. Not sure that...

I think there are too many variables to do any sort of statistical analysis, although I do know of at least one story that was revised from a form rejection into a winner. Strange New Worlds is back... with a catch

Strange New Worlds is basically an official publishing opportunity for Star Trek fanfiction. I know a few people here have published in it in the past, and will probably be pleased to see it return. But there's a catch, and it's kind of a doozy. http://www.startrekbooks.com/contest_rules The new inc...
