Fun thing about this writer gig is it doesn't really matter what any of us thinks of any particular story we create. After all, we're the absolute worst judges of our own stuff. wotf017

Good luck!

Alternative is getting a helpful friend to read it for you, or even, some say, to reading it aloud.

Ishmael, you have mentioned this advice before - I think it's fantastic! - and after reading it I started doing something like it. I tweaked it a bit, so what I do is read my story out loud while recording it. I then go somewhere quiet to sit and listen to the playback. For me it works wonderfully for catching typos, figuring out word rearrangement issues, where breathing breaks should be (does that comma belong there?!), if my paragraph breaks makes sense, etc.
Also, I find doing this helps makes the story feel fresh to me, by listening to it, and I don't get too caught up in staring at the page trying to see the forest but for all the trees... wotf008

Whenever I try using the text reader program just as a fail-safe, I regularly find errors I've missed. Silly little things like 'though' for 'through' for example. Also when I'm editing I seem quite often to leave 'the the' where maybe I've tried to shorten 'the shell of the turtle' to 'the turtle's shell' etc. You can snap the speed up to 150 wpm and still pick up the errors, I find.

What it won't do is pick up unclosed or unopened speech marks. I often do that too.

Not sure what the variance from year to year, but I just looked back to see when I got my response for Q3 from last year. I got the email on 9/16, so hopefully you brought some crackers into the box fort ;)

Your story has been judged and did not place in the 3rd quarter

which is a bummer.

It's probably my favorite story submitted this year.

hmm

I'll go have a look at that.

I just had the thought today that it would be something to get results before I even start with the revision,

Sigh, way too soon to be anything except a total rejection. Well, I suppose it could be a HM but more than likely a complete failure again. Don't think I could have done any better with that story I am at the end of my ability.

I will double check later this weekend. Going out of town for 39th wedding anniversary so maybe see Sunday night.

wotf014 *big hugs for everyone who got an R* I'm sorry, guys. Keep trying, though! There's still five and a half weeks to get something in for this quarter.

I haven't heard anything yet, which makes me stupidly nervous. I even checked my spam folder, just to be safe. Or paranoid. Paranoid is also an option.

Wow, this is quick! Commiserations for the early Rs. They are so rough to see after all the work that goes into an entry. Peony, I caught your paranoia and also checked my spam folder. Still nothing. Phew!

Commiserations to the R's. Twenty odd reported on The Grinder so this is a substantial wave. Newcomers should take some consolation from the quality of the experienced writers who went down at the same time.

I wonder if this early date for the first round suggests Dave wants to clear the decks for a very prompt start on Q4, which tends to be the biggest quarter but also has to be completed in time for the big party to be organised.

wotf015 I don't expect I'll make it much farther, with that many good options.

Ahh well. I've already made it farther than I'd feared. Onward and upward! wotf024

I agree, with those odds I guess I'm lucky to have even made it through the first pass!

I wonder if this means there will be more semis and silvers this quarter, since that many stories are being considered for finalist spots. It's highly unlikely that I'll make finalist, but it would feel pretty nice to get my first semi.
