Same boat here. Realistically, whats the best we can hope for? It would seem at his point all the higher placing submissions would have been informed right? I would think all the finalists semis and silvers would have been dealt with.

I'm just hoping for an HM at this point.

I would like to know as well. Also, in regards to phone calls-- what happens if you miss Joni's call? I would imagine she would not leave a voicemail but call back at a later date/time. I know she can get quite busy around this time of year. In fact it would be plausible for her to finish sending other emails/calls before trying to reach a finalist a second time. Anyone with some experience on this process, preferably past finalists?

She left a voicemail for me when I was a finalist last year, and then called back later.

I emailed my entry after getting locked out of the portal. So I guess I'm just hoping for an HM at this point.

I guess the question that should be asked at this point is, have any email people heard back yet? If someone has that should tell us a response is imminent.

For what it’s worth, you can always email Joni and ask for the status of your story. She’s very friendly and replies quickly. Don’t pester her, obviously, but a short polite email has worked before.

That's good to know! I think I'll wait it out just a bit longer though. No use in rushing things at this point. It's just weird that I got a private call exactly around the time everyone started getting their results on Monday. Good thing Kristy confirmed Joni leaves voicemails though, otherwise I may have driven out to see Joni! I'm in San Diego so LA is only a stone's throw away.

I got an HM, which is a step down from the SHM this story got last year. But I haven't seen any other silvers this quarter, so maybe there just weren't any?

Anyway, I just got feedback on a different story that tells me how to fix this one. So I'm going to rewrite it and submit it again... probably for Q1 36. Need to make room for some new stories too.

Seems like we should be seeing a lot more results, maybe there will be a few waves of emails. I am sure the whole end of the year website mess is taking a while to sort out. I feel so bad for waiting to submit and adding to the chaos Joni has to deal with. I knew better.

So if we’re in the had to email pile and haven't heard yet, does that mean an R?

Thanks.

I bet theres hope for HM maybe SHM just don't get hopes up for something spectacular. I bet all the highest placing submissions have been dealt with. But I don't know :) *shrug.

Schrodinger's WOTF submission. HM or rejection? The result is a superposition of both states until I open the email and collapse the wave function. Or something. Just need that email haha.

This is not accurate. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there have been many finalists that found out they were finalists later than most. This is especially true if you sent a hardcopy in or had to manually email it to Joni. There must have been a good number of email entries because of the glitch, and Joni is probably working extra hard (more than usual anyway) to track down emails/phone numbers.

Oh ok, that makes a lot of sense. I wonder how many submissions had to be done through email entries.

Glenn,
Yes, sometimes Joni can't reach someone or a phone # has changed... In my previous quarter, M.T. Chambers didn't know he was a finalist until after the list came out. He was backpacking in Asia!

However, I do strongly believe that the 8 finalists are picked. When we see one, Joni has them all.

That's what I was thinking. And unless there are some wacky communication circumstances she will have contacted them all by now.

I wouldn't personally worry too much about a late reply. For one of the 2017 quarters, the portal closed on the last day and I dashed off in a panic to the post office. Mailed it the old-fashioned way. It took a while to hear back, but I ended up getting an HM.

The reply will come. Don't panic. (Though a part of me likes Glenn's idea of driving off to LA wotf004 ).

This is good to know. I'm going to make sure to submit through the system from here on out to avoid giving her and David extra work. When you got called for your two finalists, how did it go? Seems like every finalist has a different Joni experience.

Just queried Joni. Wow she's quick, super nice too. Anyway, got an HM. I was hoping to graduate to at least Semi finalist with this one. Oh well, now that I have that out of the way, onward to Q3!

I suggest anyone who's still waiting for results to send her a quick query.

Boy my memory must have gotten off. I thought I had received a rejection for this one already. Because of that I am not sure which story I sent in for this one either.

But anyway I blew it, a total miss. I looked for the story but can't find one that it would be.

Came back to say, oh probably that story.

There are strange things happening in the world. I got home tonight and there was a message my machine. It was Joni! She called to say that she knows she sent me my semi-finalist email, and she wanted to congratulate me. Then she said she has even better news for me. Turns out, one of the finalists was disqualified, and guess what, my story got moved up from semi-finalist to...you guessed it...finalist! I'm a freaking finalist! Not kidding. Unless somebody's playing a cruel and clever joke, I'm a finalist. Judging, she says, will soon be underway. So that's it. I'm going to go freak out now.

It's interesting that you were told it's a disqualification. I'm aware of two withdrawals. If there's also a DQ, then there might be a third slot opening up.

Congratulations, and good luck!

Congratulations! That's great news. I bet your story is awesome, and I'm sure the bump is well deserved. I'd be curious to know whether the administrators are being truthful about the reasons a slot opened up. Joni may have told you a finalist was "disqualified," but one slot opened up because I withdrew my Q1 Finalist story last week. http://benjaminckinney.com/withdrawing-from-writers-of-the-future/

Edit: it appears that Kyle above was correct, there have been two Finalist withdrawals from Q1 2018, though the other has not made a public statement.
