Panzerfaust
A man portable, anti-armor, rocket propelled, shaped-charge explosive device; recoil-less type: that's MPAARPSCED. I suppose one might call the panzerfaust the father of our LAW rocket due to its disposable tube. The RPG innovation: the Soviets engineered theirs with a reusable, rifle-like launcher. In WWII, we had the bazooka.

certainly thinking about it.
I'm current elbow deep in a novel, but just before I started it I wrote a quick little story that a number of people have liked.
So, I may email my short story agent and tell her that the newest one is going to WOTF.

Right! That's it!

If I get another non-finalist, more than 10 in a row, I'm out,

Paying attention, Dave?

Huh.

David gave me an H-M. What gives? He hates my stuff, unlike K.D. who liked me. (grin)

Just rewrote it and will send it out to a major commercial market in the daylight.

Was planning to add flesh to the few bones of the Q4 story this weekend anyway.

Hell, I hit double digits a long time ago. That's part of the reason why I don't enter every quarter. A guy can only take so much, although the HM does provide a bit of an incentive.

An entry in our Better Late Than Never when it comes to saying thank you section.

My Silver story was stuck in three figures (word count) and going nowhere in particular until I did a 450 exchange with Dustin and he encouraged me to persevere with it.

Obviously it still lacked just a little edge but it got me closer than ever before, so many thanks to Dustin for this.

The 450 exchanges have dwindled somewhat of late, but I think almost everyone can benefit by constructive criticism of their opening scene. We don't always know when we have something worthwhile. We don't always write it down well even when we do have something worthwhile.

For many entries the first 450 is going to be critical to whether Dave reads the whole story and even hard pressed folk can usually squeeze in a 450 crit somewhere. (Except of course when they can't.) So here's at least one vote for keeping a good idea going.

+1 thanks to Dustin (who provided my first-ever first 450 critique)

Was this the "Bring out your dead!" story? Well, I call it that because of the Monty Python... Oh, you know.
I'm excited for you! There was definitely a fun edge to that story, and I could see its potential. Glad it scored well for you.

Now, get out there and sell it!

Ellie, your writing is smooth and easy to read. The S-HM is just the start.
I'll be sending my Q4 450 to you soon. Not sure about the whole story only because I don't want to impose 8k on you with a week left while you're still writing your own. But hey, the start is make or break, so let's get those just right! wotf011

Congrats to all the HMs and above trickling in!!

Um, so I have a question...about how long does it usually take between notifying the finalists and announcing the winners. I'm already twitching like crazy and, for my sanity, I'm kind of wondering how long this might last.

Also wondering what this 450 exchange is that people are talking about? I'd be happy to trade some critiques if that's how it works?

Cheers

Aww, thanks, Dustin! I can't wait to read it.

JenD-F, there's about a month between finalists and winner announcements.

The first 450 exchange is a critique exchange of the first 450 words of your story. There's an entire thread devoted to the concept here: http://forum.writersofthefuture.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1074
The first post in the thread describes how it works. Post a reply to the thread when you want to take part, and in theory, other forum members will contact you.

Congrats, Jen! Last quarter, Joni called about a week later with my finalist results, but they didn't post the official results until about a month later. I'm sure that varies from quarter to quarter, but I bet you'll hear something soon. Good luck to you!!

It very much varies. My first finalist (Q3 last year) took three weeks, my second finalist (last quarter), only a week. I was actually surprised how fast the results came back last time.

Oh man... I'd just about settled on the idea of it being a couple of months before I'd hear, and I may as well forget about it for now, stop thinking about it and calm down... and then you say something like that.

It's been a week already. It could be any time!

Oh, thanks for the replies! That is possibly much sooner than I expected as well!

Sadly I spend many mornings up in the mountains where there is no cell phone reception...I suspect I have a few loooong twitchy mornings coming up.

Good luck to you too Matt! May we both be in the top 3!
