With this story. Which I second- and third- and fourth-guessed myself about before shrugging and pushing the Submit button. To be fair, I did rewrite the thing with Dave's sensibilities in mind, and I'm fair certain that had I sent it in, in its original form, it would not have placed at all.

But I fully expected a form R for this one, you guys. I am gobsmacked.

Congratulations at last! Fingers crossed for you.

Congrats, finalists!

Guess I'll find out after the holidays what my submission status actually was. I'm still getting marketing e-mails like crazy but no hint of any response to my query. Ah well—I guess the good thing about having finally written something that you thought could have made finalist is that you're also excited to shop it around elsewhere too...

Finally got a response back--all that excitement for nothing. An R :). More than happy to have that story free for submission elsewhere and I'm in for this new quarter.

That's a tough break. Every so often we all get terribly excited only to find an email went astray. Quite recently I thought I'd set a world record wait for Clarkesworld until I queried and found it had been spun after about one day. Ah the joys of an artistic life!

Yeah, part of you wants to shake your fist and yell "PHILISTINES!" and the other part automatically assumes that the only reason you thought your story was publishable in the first place is your flawed taste--the same one which leads you to write unpublishable stories.

Big congratulations to all the finalists!
Commiseration for everyone cheering from the side lines.
I've been absent lately (working 6 days a week at the day job and head down in the novel no one will like) so I can't call out people and friends one by one, but be certain that I share your joy and frustration.

This is me often. I don't mind, though -- I'd rather submit less often, but be confident that the story I'm submitting is up to a standard I'm happy with, than rush the stories out.

One thing I struggled with towards the end of last year was an insane work schedule -- I stopped just about everything that wasn't work, and still barely managed to meet my deadlines before breaking for Christmas. Fortunately, it's rarely as insane as that, but it really put the final nail in the coffin of my trying to sub for the upcoming Q1.

Just waiting for my response. Expecting an "R" because I've read some of the HMs others have posted links to and mine's just not as good (yet. Practice Practice!). Plus, since I've posted, I've done some serious improvements on the story I sent in. It's still overloaded, but hey, that's the learning process.

I''m in the same boat. Couldn't get it out by Dec 31st. On the bright side, got a really good start toward March 31.

It's kind of a crap shoot, Owens. I got an HM the quarter before last for a story that I think is worse in every way than the one which was rejected last quarter. People pooh-poohed my HM and loved my R, but when you're applying to this or any contest or medium in which a limited number of people are gatekeepers, you're going to end up having some things which most people won't like really clicking with them and vice-versa.

Taste is subjective, and in the two WotF collections I've read my favorite stories were usually ones almost nobody talked about and the only ones I've hated have been fan-favorites. Maybe that's a signal that I'm writing for the wrong contest, but it's keeping me writing and that can't be bad. As you say, it's the learning process :).
