I was once a confused newb to the contest. Now I'm just confused.
But I would be far more confused if it were not for the wealth of information provided by members of this forum. Here are some answers to the newb questions I had, for you future newbs who might be as confused as I was.1) How does the judging process work?
Dave Farland, the coordinating judge, determines whether a story is a Rejection, Honorable Mention (roughly 10%), Silver Honorable Mention (top 50), Semi-Finalist (no set number, roughly 8 to 12) or Finalist (exactly 8). Dave forwards the Finalist entries to a panel of four judges who select the top 3 winners of the quarter.2) When can I expect results?
According to the combined observations of forum members, there are at least two waves of rejections. In the Dave Farland era, the first rejection wave has arrived as early as 23 days after the close of submissions (V31 Q4). Another rejection wave coincides with reports of higher results. Honorable Mentions and above have been reported as early as 65 days for Q4 (V31), 73 days for Q3 (V32), 78 days for Q2 (V31), and 78 days for Q1 (V30). Winners are announced roughly a month after Finalists.3) Which submissions get feedback?
Only Semi-Finalists get feedback. Finalists, Silver Honorable Mentions, and Honorable Mentions do not get feedback. Rejections do not get feedback.4) Can I revise and resubmit my story?
If your story was a Rejection, Honorable Mention, or Silver Honorable Mention, yes. If it was a Semi-Finalist or Finalist, no.
