Post your WotF "score"

Postby Dustin Adams » Mon Sep 21, 2015 12:42 pm

Note: This thread is just for fun. It's not srs.
Just killing time between twichathons.

Way back when I was a chess playing fool, I assigned a score to each piece. This way I knew if I had an advantage over my opponent, even if I had less captured pieces than them. Queen = 10, rook = 5, bishop & knight = 3, and pawns = 1.

Here's how I'd score our results:

Finalist = 5
Semi F = 3
Sliver = 2
HM = 1

Given that, my current score = 21 wotf022

You?
2x Finalist
1x Semi
2x Silver
7x HM
Eight EDF stories. DSF: Flash1. Flash2. Short Story. My Semi-F

I have a grand total of . . . 0. wotf005

Outside of my win, all I have is a lonely rejection that discouraged me from entering again for two years (it came at a time when I was not very confident as a writer). Makes me wonder what my score would be had I kept entering.

Hey, I honestly think that's really cool. wotf010 Entering twice and winning on your second try? That's pretty epic.

Hmm... I think winning should have a score for sure. But I also think Rs should have a score. Persistence is a virtue after all. How about:
R=1
HM=3
SHM=5
SF=7
non winning F=10
published F =12
3rd=15
2nd=17
1st=20
Grand Prize = 30
(each entry receives only one score)

BY that system I have a score of 10. By Dustin's scoring, 2.

Mine's an easy one...big ol score of 2. Personally I'd rather just win it then rack up a lot of points. I'd be happy with a final score of 7. It's all up to you now Dave!

Aah, my secret motivation is revealed.

'Bout a year and a half ago, when I was bumming about my string of rejections, I gave myself a contest goal: 10 HMs. So I've been writing the best stories I can, getting up early, polishing, studying, reading, all with a clear goal in mind. Rack 'em up.

Sure, the ultimate goal is winning, but you must learn to walk before you can run, and run before you can fly.

I'm currently at 7, and sitting here every morning in the dark, sipping coffee, working on my Q4, all to score at least one... more... point. wotf013

On the Dustin Scale I have six.

Six? One miserable fathom? Six, you say?

I do say, yes. If memory serves I have around 16 entries and around 11 Rs. That's around 28 on the Aaron Scale though.

But matey, there's rejections and rejections, am I right? As I recall your first two fell into the category of How did he dare enter this? But the last couple were more along the lines of How could Dave possibly reject this?

This is true.

So you obviously worked too hard for one point those last times?

Arguably.

So I sez, under the Aaron system you could have sent in the first story 11 times and got the same score!

Hmm, well both scoring systems are self reported, so feel free to exclude entries you feel are unworthy of a point. I excluded my first entry because I (presumably) didn't provide a valid email (I never received anything from Joni, including all the marketing blasts). I also didn't count a story I resubmitted. The first time around I got an HM, the second an R. I did revise it and in my opinion made it better, but it didn't feel like sufficient effort to warrant a point.

I've got either a mighty two on the Dustin scale, or an eight following the amoskalik algorithm. After my first entry last year, I took a while to get round to actually submitting another -- spent a while working on one story, decided it wasn't done, skipped the quarter, worked on it some more, decided it wasn't done, skipped the quarter, and then submitted something completely different in the next one. I still have that first one to finish...

I'm weirdly amused by this thread, because I have a big, fat zero by either scoring method. wotf019 But, hey. One more week and I get to start sweating!

By the original post, my score is 7.

(19 entries = 1 SF + 4 HMs + 14 Rs).

Oh geez this is going to be my 20th submission to the contest. No pressure no pressure... (Although I may revise my signature to capture all this data as a reminder to submit more often. I've only been submitting 2 to 3 times a year).
