Writers of the Future is from... _the future_

Postby MattDovey » Fri Oct 16, 2015 5:04 am

It's true! I have proof, in writing!

Image

I mean, I suppose that 2018 could have been a slip of the finger as Joni tapped the date out on the number pad, what with the 8 being just above the 5 and all, but I think we can all agree it's much more likely that WoTF is in fact a carefully set up system designed to discover visionaries and creative geniuses who can be put to work on a time travel project, and the writing contest is simply a cover and a screening process for discovering those brave and incredible few who tower over the rest of us intellectually and who can deliver us from the mess we're making of the world.

The only flaw in this theory is that they've selected me. I suppose it's a case of hiding the signal in the noise, and throwing people off the scent by selecting the odd idiot like yours truly.

Make sure to screenshot this thread. If it gets deleted, you'll all know it's true, and you need to send a rescue squad to Hollywood to fetch me.

Hah! A none-too-subtle attempt to throw us off the scent here. I suspect this means the names of all winners up to and including Volume 35 are already known!

Brilliant!

Just one more reason why this contest is stupendous.

So glad you shared that.

(And congratulations! I look forward to reading in print what I am sure will be signal and not noise... of course I will be doing that reading quite some time in the future. Or will I? Now I've confused myself.)

Hey, you got a letter with your check/que!

I didn't get a letter... Just the check/que. Which I guess is more important, anyway. wotf019

Why then, lead on.— O, that a man might know
The end of this day's business ere it come!
But it sufficeth that the day will end,
And then the end is known.

Send us a message back from the future to let us know if the robot army has taken charge yet. I need to know if I should go off the grid now.

Also, let me know when rocket shoes will be commercially available. I want to know when to start saving up.

Maybe it's cos I'm furren and need things explainin' more? (cf. the idiot theory above.)

Or maybe it's because I'm the only one who's going to get a cheque on publication wotf011

Hey, wait... wotf014

(I think they're actually talking about the per-word pay you get for publication, by the way, which is separate from the prize money--so everyone should be getting an extra check/que unless they're just going to give everybody's to you. In which case you're buying my meals all week this April. wotf004 )

I believe that is, indeed, what it's referencing, and it's a cheque I never knew about, so that's a pleasant surprise wotf007 as best I can gather it's either 20 cents per word up to 5000 words, or equals your prize money... which either way, comes out at the same figure for me.

On an unrelated note, our avatars look like they're having a very odd argument with each other over the internet now. I'm not sure who comes off worse; you arguing with a child, or me arguing with a braying donkey*.

All we're missing is an avatar of J.W. Alden with a typewriter to have ourselves a V32 1st-place three-way face-off.
