I would agree with the "make 'em feel"

Also throw in a few science stuffs, you know, just to throw them off of the feels.

My finalist story was only 2,300 words. I like to think what maybe caught Dave's attention was the emotional stuff. It's not a sad ending, but definitely one to tug on the heartstrings as much as any sci-fi cyborg can. wotf001 It also had a good twist at the end.
