I saw that one last night too. But since I had just sent in my story I thought it was something to do with that, so no worries about Q2. But I have a badge already even though a while back she asked if I wanted a HM badge I think I said yes.

This is so painful. Is this the longest the contest has ever taken to get out the first wave of rejections? Do you think that maybe it means the subsequent rounds will take less time, or is that just wishful thinking?

I guess that 97 Grinder rejection was a false alarm. Unless everyone on this forum was so awesome that none of us was rejected in the first round.

My guess is the 97 day rejection was a mistake, perhaps someone who logged their Q1 wrong.

Not to make you twitch too much but last year, the Q2 Finalist calls came the first week of August....

Yes, I remember reading that somewhere before - of course, last years Q2 rejections came out on the 24th May. So by extension it means this year's Q2 finalists may not hear until SEPTEMBER!!!!

One thing to remember about this Q is that all the final day entries will (I believe) be paper subs because the submission engine broke. If I'm correct, that means each e-mail Joni received has to be printed (because she can't put it in the machine).

So you have maybe 1/2 of the entries in the first 89 days, and the other 1/2 on the final day. (I'm making those stats up, but given Stephanie's list, I may not be far off).

Thus, there may be a first round delay this time because of the extra logistics in shipping boxes of paper back and forth.

All guess(omancy)es.

Oh lord, you're right... I forgot all about that. And Dave is, at least judging by facebook etc, always off teaching and stuff. I can't imagine that he wants to pack along a whole bunch of paper subs....

And worse, now I remember I need to have my story in a day early. Right, got to get back to editing. Almost done with the move, so maybe I'll have time next week...

Ugh. I'm so, so confident for Q2. If this story doesn't win, then nothing will. Surprised rejections haven't started pouring in yet.

A little bird told me before July. Also heard that one reason for the slowdown is multiple times as many paper entries because of the submission system shutting down early. wotf004

I have felt that way before. Still got a rejection. With two of those stories I later found some spots where the writing wasn't as good as I thought. With another two I still don't know what was so bad with the writing. Then I got the HM from Dave. At least he read that one all the way through and liked something about it.

Part of me still feels that way about the Q3 tale but I won't know about that until another two months at the very least, probably more like four+.

Q2 wotf017 It's a revision and even though the writing is now better, that may not be saying much. How much better is the question. I like to think it is SHM material but as I said wotf017

I used up a five year quota of twitches last year during Q2 & Q4. Getting repetitive motion syndrome from hitting Refresh (Which isn't refreshing in the least. It's more like 'peek out from under the covers to see if the monster is still there' scary.).

This year, I'm a pillar of stoicism! I mean, that's what pillars are. They just stand there, aloof, beyond care.
Go ahead, tell me that the first wave is coming soon.
Remind me that I have great hopes for my Q2 story.
You can't make me *twitch*

Quick note:

First off, something can be a totally amazing story and still "not right for WOTF".

Second, you could write an amazing, wonderful, fantastic story but if 8 other people send in something just a tiny bit better... then you won't get in. There are hundreds of entries every quarter, and only 8 finalists, 8 SF. I'm really glad they're doing SHMs now because that gives us another level of feedback.

Most importantly, I submitted the best story I'd ever written to WOTF back in Q3 of V31. Then in Q2 of V32, same thing. Then last quarter, I submitted the best story I've ever written. And in three or four days? Submitting the best story I've ever written. Every time we write we get better. The best story you've ever written will not be the best story you'll ever write until you're dead.

The beauty of writing constantly is that, before you know it, you have a lot of stories and the importance of any one of them finding success becomes that much less critical. It also gives you a lot of perspective. Yes, the last story you've written always feels like the best at that time, but eventually you see each story for what it truly is. Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. They are never as bad as we fear or as good as we dream.
