Results for Q1 have still not been posted, but that quarter is definitely over. There is a possibility that Q2 is not "over" but it seems to me to be a very remote possibility. I would love to be wrong, though. wotf008

It's weird that Q1 results have not yet been posted. Even weirder that not everyone from Q2 has even been notified by email what their result was. Am I wrong in thinking that everyone with an e-submission has heard back, and that nobody with a paper sub has heard?

Where are people getting the specific numbers, like 6 finalist spots left?

There are 8 finalists, and two (on other boards) have said they are finalists.

Hey guys! Long-time lurker... Just wanted to chime in about the stories that didn't get a reply yet for Q2.

I submitted my story end of February, so well ahead of the end of the quarter, and I submitted electronically. So this isn't about paper submissions or late submissions... Seems a number of submitters just haven't received a reply yet.

At this point I'm assuming the delay isn't because Joni is waiting to make my finalist status extra special... We'll see!

Towards the end of last month Joni said her tech person was away and therefore she wasn't sure if a blog would be posted. No knowledge of whether this situation has been resolved. It would explain lack of a blog but not lack of personal results.

I do wonder about the ones who are finalists. From what I've read in the past Joni asks for time to let everyone know before letting the news out. I assume that doesn't apply this time.

Well, I was trying to not put too fine a point on it, but here goes. We are trying to be professional writers here, and this forum exists, among other things, to encourage that. So should we be sending our stories to other pro markets when we don't have official notice that our story didn't make it? The answer is no. Pro writers know this. You can burn a market because it is in reality a simultaneous submission, and I doubt you'll be able to live down an "I'm sorry, I thought my story hadn't won but now it has, and so I'm taking this back, kind editor that wanted to give me a chance, but please remember me next time, I promise this won't happen again."

Don't be that guy. : )

And here's the other thing I commented on. We know Joni is overwhelmed, hell, I'm still waiting for certificates from the last two quarters. But because she's so nice and we're so impatient, should we really be sending multiple emails asking what our status is when it's obvious all results aren't completely in yet? If we queried a pro market multiple times about what the status of our submission is before they even have a chance to reply (and sometimes peeps do before their guideline date to check as well), what's going to happen? We certainly aren't going to appear professional, and we aren't going to enhance our chances with that editor. Granted, Joni is really nice, and she's not the editor she's the contest administrator, but that shouldn't give us license to be less than professional because she is so accessible. And all of us should be encouraging patience and professionalism, it's going to help all of our careers. This is a contest, but it's also publishing, and publishing is a slow snail and we need to get used to that fact right away or we're going to be really unhappy people. And maybe even burn some bridges we could have stepped across to new destinations one day, but now they're smoldering ruins.

Don't be that gal. : )

All the best,

~Moon~

Thank you, Dustan, you've summed things up nicely. I strongly recommend people not send
their story elsewhere til they have confirmation from WOTF.

For those wondering why some of us think the Finalists have been notified: Apparently 2 people on other forums have said they are Finalists. Joni asks Finalists to stay mum until she's contacted all 8 Finalists. Ergo, they've all been notified now. Of course, it could be they are just ignoring Joni's request. But it only takes her a few days to reach all 8 usually.

But it ain't over til it's over.

Yes, we want to be professional, but there are protocols for lost submissions. Query once at an appropriate time. Now that finalists should be notified is an appropriate time. Then wait for a time, I believe a month is appropriate. That's why I changed my mind to wait until September to send elsewhere (after a last query) unless winners are announced before.

Agreed. The understandable confusion that is arising is due to no official announcement of all the finalists being contacted. Everything I am seeing is conjecture.

I guess once we start hearing about Q3 results is when we'll know for sure they have moved on. wotf011

It's possible some of the last day subs are still in the running. With all the confusion after the early portal closing, not to mention finishing another great anthology release, a lot of people just need rest, while we on the forum are still anxious and full of hope. wotf007

HM here. (I've been off-grid for the past two weeks.)

Each of my four HMs so far have been in a series with a repeating lead character. I imagine that the WotF doesn't ever publish stories from a series. I wonder if the stories might have rated higher if I could have made them completely stand alone.

My story in V32 and Stephen Merlino's both come from established universes with repeating characters, magic, and themes. FYI. They just have to tell a compelling story on their own.

And let's not forget Patrick Rothfuss winning with a (tweaked) excerpt from The Name of the Wind, before that was published.

Nope. Still hanging in there.

If we start hearing results for Q3, I will take that as the go ahead to query about Q2 submissions still waiting for notification.

Still no word. Today we get to enjoy 24 hours of Thursday.
Honey will you listen for my phone while I shower.
I can't cut the grass because it drowns out the phone.
No we can't listen to surround sound, I have to hear the phone.

Tomorrow's Thursday still nary a word
has been shared between us, no nothing's been heard
out-of state robo-apps are my daily calls
Squirming, twitching staring at walls

On breaks from writing, emails get checked
Waiting for news, will my psyche get decked
Everything happens for a reason they say
So reason to dread, tomorrow is Thursday

I'm new to this. I'm gathering this prolonged wait is unusual, particularly since there's been reports some of the finalists have been notified? Hope you all get notified of your results soon. wotf007

I hope you're feeling on the mend.
It's been so long since I last saw you;

No not a word
There's been just zilch, nix, nothing.

And the writers twitched and frayed,
While The Sound of Silence played,

There's no-one home, and without warning
We heard the whole darn thing had
Gone and just closed down;
They all left town
And we had zilch, nix, nothing.

Call me Ishmael.

I was thinking of doing that rhyme, Ishmael. Glad you took the bull by the horns. Funny...if there wasn't so much truth within the verse. : )

Oh, and to the person that asked, Thursday has become iconic for contest results notifications. The odd thing is, news appears to come out on Thursdays more than any other day, so we just hang our angst around Thursday because it's a good bet. And it's not uncommon to have long waits, it's just uncommon to have some announcing they are finalists when a quantified segment within the contest quarter has heard nothing at all.

I believe Dave is at a con at Palm Springs this weekend. I put a bug in my friend's ear who is signing her book in his booth to ask him what's up with finishing up Q2, but who knows if she'll get around to asking.

In the meantime, sell those rhymes.

Cheerios,

~Moon~
