Volume 32 (2016)--Anthology, Workshop & Gala

Postby MattDovey » Thu Feb 11, 2016 12:03 pm

We're a bit overdue for this thread, aren't we? Martin made last year's eight months in advance, and here we are, only two months out... wotf019

This seems as excellent a way as any to kick this thread off, though: WaIotF posted the cover for Volume 32 on their Facebook yesterday, and it is utterly fantastic in every way I can think of:
Image

I am seriously so much in love with that image. I can't believe I get to have my story behind that cover. It is glorious.

And I get to share a table of contents with Brandon Sanderson, to which the only appropriate response my brain can formulate is OMGWTFAREYOUKIDDINGME

This thing is really happening, huh?

I didn't see that! I can get behind that cover!

I got my edit notes from DF yesterday and am working through them despite a terrible flu. Fortunately most of the 100+ notes were turning my underlines into italics wotf004

I didn't count mine, to be honest, but there were only three or four pages without a note in my 15k-word story.

In Word (2010, at least, I presume the same in 2007+) click on the Review tab and click on Reviewing Pane and it will tell you how many corrections and how many of each type. Majority of mine were deleting underscores (two each time, of course) and formatting to italics, then about half a dozen actual comments, which I thought was pretty light going after tales I'd heard from past winners of whole plot lines added or amended.

Or maybe it's because you can't polish a poop... wotf017

I saw that as well, in all its glorious Hollywood technicheese. Utterly bizarre to me that, in a way, that video is about me.

I mean, and others as well, but mostly me. ME ME ME. I'm the important one here. Even though I don't have anywhere near enough beard to have a chance of winning the grand prize, not in competition with Jon, JW & Stewart.

That is a nice cover, and a bit of a departure from their usual ones, I think.

I love that cover!

A kindergartener at my 5yo's school was telling me my beard is too long and I needed to cut it.

Seems like Matt is so desperate he's even using school children to increase his chances of getting his hands on that golden pen.

Sad. wotf004

I never posted the interviews, did I?

C. Stuart Hardwick was a V30 winner, and does interviews with each year's winners. He's just posted the third, which has reminded me to mention them here.

So far we have...

I'll post more as they go up at Stuart's blog.

I've also just realised how much I waffle on, given that my interview is twice as long as the others. Whoops.

Great interviews everyone. Disagree with you Matt though on which ST series did SF best - for me it's the original series! wotf011

TNG was the one I grew up on, whereas I went back to TOS, and you always have a soft spot for your first Trek, I think :)

It's also how we spend our lunchtimes in work when it's the school holidays; on the one hand, there's all these big projectors and sound systems lying around fallow in empty classrooms and halls, and on the other hand, one of the techs in my office has TNG on Blu-Ray... wotf022

Yes I have. Some great episodes too.

BTW, Robert J. Sawyer - a Canadian SF writer - Flashforward series was based on the book of the same name - posted this on Facebook about the upcoming gala:

"If you'll be in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 10, come join me, Kevin J. Anderson, Doug Beason, Eric Flint, Nancy Kress, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Todd McCaffrey, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Tim Powers, Mike Resnick, Sean Williams, Dave Wolverton, and other Writers of the Future Judges for the annual Writers and Illustrators of the Future Awards gala. Free tickets (but reserve in advance by emailing contests@authorservicesinc.com) for the gala ceremony, followed by a reception."
