So...having just read that the first rejections are hitting people's inbox's, I go to my mailbox and see an email from Joni wotf018

Was not the feared 'R' (well not yet anyway), rather an offer to buy vol32. I nearly twitched right out my chair.

Anyone else had a similar email?

Yes, I got that too, but I read it before I knew about the R wave, so I was a little less twitchy.

I'm out

Completely The editing didn't help any.

From the date stamp I probably did get it last night.

If I can remember to do I'll see what Edith at Universe says about it.

Condolences to the R's. We've all been there! At least it's nice to have a proper wave for once.
I had 89 emails today. Yikes! I didn't see my R in there yet. Kind of thought I might get one as the story I submitted was...different...yeah.

Geez. I got my SHM for Q2 results just this week, and now I already have to start twitching for Q3? I haven't even caught my breath yet.

Honestly, my day job is too stressful for me to allow myself to twitch, these days. I never would have expected twitching to be a luxury, but that's how it feels at the moment. wotf017

I'm out. Got my rejection in the wee hours of the morning. I had thought this was my last quarter of remaining eligibility, but when I checked with Joni to be sure she said I'm still good for Q4. So...twitchiness for most of the rest of the year ensues.

This time I was sort of numb to rejection. My mom passed away in July, after a very long time of bad health when I took care of her, and I'm still so tired, stressed, and busy that rejection is pretty much just vying for attention. Very weird collision of circumstances.

Anyone else noticed that Dave's Kick for today or was it yesterday's was what rejection really means?

Haven't read it yet but But it made me say Hmmm

Condolences, Muri.

May I tell you a little story?

When my mother died a few years ago I was committed to a poetry reading the next evening. (Not just me, the whole writers' group, but I'd written a lot of the poems and tickets had been sold etc.) The organiser hadn't told me in what order I was to read my poems; she just handed me a pile when I arrived and said they were in order. I didn't tell her or anyone else there about Mum's death.

Most of the poems were humorous but there was one quietly philosophical piece about the transitory human condition. I already knew that one was going to be on top of the pile. And it was.

Now some people will call it a coincidence. To me it was far too meaningful for that. And attempting to communicate our perceptions of such meaning is one of the important reasons why we write. Whether my work is accepted or not, if I feel I've said what I wanted to say, I derive a great deal of satisfaction.

Don't feel you are alone.

Best wishes. And good luck for Q4.

Yes... I did notice and skimmed it. In a nutshell it was a warning to not give up just because you are rejected. He says it means you must try harder. There wasn't anything specific about what to avoid in a submission, though.

Rejected. I seem to be taking it stoically. I guess all those submissions to F&SF and Clarkesworld have toughened me up. Good luck, all.

So sorry about your mom, Muri. Grief (and relief, if a person suffered a long illness) seem to make a person more tired than hard work.

I hope you're working on a Q4 story.

My condolences as well, Muri. It took me quite a while after my dad passed to write again. Recently, I wrote a sci-fi story about him which got an HM last quarter. That was pretty cool I thought. He'd be proud. :) Best wishes to you and your family. And good luck on the Q4 then--that's awesome!

And commiserations to all the R's so far. Good luck to those twitching. I haven't heard anything yet other than Joni's buy books email--you guys have me nervous now when I check my email. *twitch*

It took me a lot of getting going after my daughter died. I eventually wrote a scifi/fantasy piece which was my first HM and inspired by what I imagined might have been going through her mind, though I doubt my imagining ever really came close to the truth.

In the past four years I have lost a wonderful daughter and then my wife. This year my grandfather, who brought me up, died of vascular dementia. Grief can be a horrible thing and, depending on circumstances, can linger for a long, long time. It is tiring and wearing and, in my case traumatic to the point of needing treatment for PTSD. One day it'll make a good story, if only as a lesson to others, but not just yet.

Best wishes and virtual hugs to anyone who needs it.

Now, back to twitching wotf004

Sorry for your losses.

I lost my little brother at age twenty three back in 09. It just about sidelined me from life for a couple years.

My condolences too. I know how that feels even with my mom it was very sudden.

And I can understand the tiredness and the rest of it.
