I didn't win, but got an email asking if I would like the story to be held for possible anthology inclusion (Joni did try phoning, but we've moved since December).

So, fingers crossed for a win before then, eh.

Wait, so you were a super secret Q1 finalist??? wotf015

I dunno

I still haven't seen a published list of winners & HM's. & I don't seem to get 'Nope, not this time, Buddy' emails. So, until the blog post goes up I never know how I've done.

well, damn.

though, I had to settle for an email saying my phone number didn't work.

In typical British understatement, ah!, hmm!, that's nice.

When I talked to Joni on the phone, she indicated that Dave had already set a few stories aside for a second pass. The first Thursday might be right around the corner!

Last week, Dave said he was nearly done with his first pass of the electronic copies, and that he'd requested the paper copies from Joni which he expected to receive by today.

I got my semi-finalist critique today. No more excuses not to start revising this story so I can send it elsewhere!

Conga rats dancing for Jeremy, Ysocks, and Inky! Kudos to Jeremy as well for First Place! How long have you been entering, Jeremy? And what's your try/fail cycle? : ) You now have a 25% chance at the Golden Pen and a serious paperweight for your desk! Should be able to withstand hurricane level winds! You entire house can blow away, but the Golden Pen Award will remain standing like a beacon of hope in all the rubble.

Best to all the HMs and up as well. And to all the new ones twitching, start developing your cast iron stomach, this is usually a marathon, not a sprint. Just like the field of professional writing itself. : )

Cheerios!

Thanks Dustan!

I first entered in 2013 and got an HM, then didn't enter again until about two years ago. I've entered every quarter since then. My record, in total, goes HM->R->R->SHM->HM->SHM->SHM->SHM->FINALISTFIRSTPLACEWOOOO!

Winning feels like a pretty big deal for me, since this contest motivated most of my short fiction writing for the last two years. I wrote a blog post about it here if you're curious to read more: https://jeremyteg.wordpress.com/

Thanks for sharing your WOTF story, Jeremy! And winning WOTF is a pretty big deal for anyone. Several of my friends got their careers jump started by the recognition from WOTF, so you're on the right track. I see you're on the opposite end of my state. How is SpoCon? Ever attended?

Congrats again!

Cheers,

Haha, I don't mean to say that it's not a big deal to win in general, just that there was a particularly personal element to it for me. And SpoCon is alright. I've only been twice, and once was when they hosted WorldCon, but it has some decent panels and the people are friendly in my experience.
