Sorry I haven't been active here. I have been terribly busy.
I wrote a novel that sank at the beta reading. (MY first attempt at a YA and well first attempt I have good ideas about how to fix it but it requires a ground up re-write.)
I'm outlining a novel and the outline has reached 45 pages and is only 3/5 completed.

However here is data for people to crunch:

Submitted Dec30
No word yet from the contest as to results.

Ishmael wrote:The Grinder suggests this was a big wave. If my count is correct more than half of the logged entries were rejected last week. Bearing in mind that The Grinder is only used by a relatively small proportion of entrants and all of them take their writing seriously, I'd guess LD is right in suggesting several waves rolled into one.

No way of knowing how far Dave read unless he tells us, but even from the limited forum sample it's obvious some big hitters struck out.

And next Thurswednesday is the Ides of March.

He has done this before with one very large wave, and as someone thought, he, or they, have also waited for a long while before sending out the next set. Or the semifinalists etc.

And I think The Ides of March have already struck many of us early.

Rejection as well. Revised resub of HM didn't work for me. I fear the second time around feels too familiar to Dave, as a lot of the excitement to a story is the experience of "wow, this is new."

Best of success to those still in. Fortune favor the brave.

Technically, I'm still in as well, although I didn't even bother to enter this submission on the grinder since I have so little faith in it. I think it could be a great story one day, but it needs a major revision first. Subbed on the 31st of December.

I'm much more excited about the story I plan to submit for Q2.

Right. The Grinder.
Need to update my sub.

I've not been into subbing lately. I have a dozen stories I could send out, but rejections hurt my soul. I know, I know, can't be a writer without the rejections... But they kill my writing, so I'ma focus on that for a bit, and sub em all when I'm ready again.

'Cept for WotF. I've had my battles with the F and R, and I'm cool with rolling with the punches.
To be honest, I find strength in Stewart Baker's track record. I'm down with 7 rejections in a row, if I get that win at the end.

Just keep writing.
Just keep submitting.

High risk, high reward. Swing for the fences and strike out. Add your own cliché, but I think for those of us who haven't achieved fame and fortune yet, it's what we have to do. Every new story needs to break new ground and stretch our limits. And we don't have a large fan base expecting more of the same, so what's the harm?

Best tactic I've found for handling rejections is knowing where I'll send the story to next (which carries an implicit "expect it to be rejected"). That, and having a few things out at a time, so I'm not focusing too much on just one sub--I have 19 things out right now :D (though of course, I'm still focusing on being in the F&SF hold pile for the first time, because brains gonna brain, and hope is impossible to crush)

Okay. My total on submission has fallen back below fifty. Got to do some more admin.

Only about three of them are poetry. But there's nothing like setting last year's record for a slow rejection by Rattle to get you thinking your poetry might almost be worth considering once again.

Oh and don't look now but it's *****day.

The award ceremony is April 2nd. I'm guessing we won't hear much more back until after then.

Then again, I could be wrong.

As of yesterday, Dave's still in the middle of his 2nd pass, and expects it to be another week or two until he completes that. So unless there's a second round of rejections yet to go out from the first pass (which is possible given how busy Joni likely is right now), you can relax on the twitching for awhile.

Hello all! I am brand new to this board, though I have subbed to the contest in the past. My first entry was Q3 of last year (got an HM), followed by a swift R in Q4. Oh, the roller coaster of emotions that is WOTF.

So I'm not too sure how the specifics work, but I DID sub for Q1 on 12/31. I have not rec'd a R email yet (which I gather is a good thing, thus far?)...I have been trolling the posts for the last few days, trying to get a sense of things, so I figured I'd just dive in and get acquainted.

Cheers!

Hello Jareb and Hire, and welcome! I've hung out here for many years, and it has helped my writing tremendously. Plus it's a good gang of folks.

At least this week I will not need to twitch with anticipation/dread, because there won't be judging happening. Have you also been following the blog? This is the workshop week, with daily updates.
