Ugh! So - more and more competition. Good for the contest I guess. I just finished reading volume 33 and there were some great stories there.

I keep forgetting to report in here, but I submitted on September 29th, and I just received the confirmation a few minutes ago, so I'm in for Quarter 4!

I first entered the contest 10 years ago this quarter, and I've only missed one quarter since--this is my 40th entry wotf024

Wow, that's determination! I'm right there with you. I'm now at 41 entries. Haven't missed a quarter since 2009. I first entered in...gulp...wait for it...1986. Yeah. It's a long story. I learned something valuable though. Don't give up.

That's an inspiration. I'm only at 11 unique stories submitted to wotf. To have 30 more little jewels to send forth into the world... best get back to work.

If we're talking unique stories, I've only had... *takes mental headcount* ...six, one of which is pending.

I think I've had 10 unique stories. 11 if you count the rewrite that only left the magic system and character names in place. Plot and characterization were different. Completely different tone to the setting too.

My other impressive statistic is that 39 of my submissions are consecutive--I submitted and then immediately missed the next quarter, but I haven't missed another since. I can't say that my persistence has paid off with the contest (yet wotf007), but it has helped me generate a lot of stories!

32 of the stories I've submitted are completely unique, in the sense that they don't share content in any way, but I almost always revise heavily before resubmitting a story, so none of my submissions have been exactly the same.

And that's the biggest thing the contest has done for me--given me a reason to write or revise at least four stories every year. I've cut it close sometimes, but I've always managed to get something in. Maybe if I started earlier, I'd have better results... wotf007

I've only re-entered the same story once. HM to reject. Still haven't broken the HM barrier, but I'm not giving up. I wonder who holds the record for most entries? Probably some people out there who have entered a hundred times.

To Beth and Preston, I also say, RESPECT.

The real way to advance our skillset is to create new stories that challenge us. It's harder to pull a story out of the air than to pull one out of the drawer. One is True Magic; the other is sleight of hand. And one day, when you win this contest, you will have a volume of work behind you that will suddenly start selling, according to some of the winners' testimonials. Or, you can publish your own short story anthology and sell it to your future rabid fans. Kudos on building a volume of fresh work. In some of those, novel ideas are resting. By novel, I mean the 100K kind.

Me, I'm a bit o' both. I write fresh, and when it's a bad quarter (bad stuff happens, sometimes REALLY bad stuff) I polish up an oldie. Now and then, I have tried revising an HM, especially if it's got some distance since last submission, like to a former judge--those are all fair game. I have not had much success with that, except for garnering another HM. My semi-finalist with Dave was an old story I had revised--simply because when I read it, I recognized a flaw of my old style...my old works are dominated by purple prose.

For me, pushing out into uncharted waters is where it's at. Fresh writing. Nothing will challenge you more. And in challenges, you are forced to develop new skills, and hone the old ones. Looking at the contest as a way to develop four distinctly new stories every year is a very good idea. Hopefully, we're writing more than that, but we all have to start somewhere.

Fortune favor the bave,

~Moon~

Ha ha! This is probably one of those things where you're hoping you DON'T see an email this early, right? Because the rejections are probably the first ones to get notified?

So,

This is my first time entering since 2014. In general, when do rejections start rolling out so I can start sweating?
