Joni said it was okay to "shout that you're a finalist from the mountaintops," and she hoped to have the winners notified soon. Welp, here goes being productive, right?

Jficke13,

Congratulations! Shout away, that's a noble achievement and hard won!

Here's to getting the next call, and the sale, and the workshop, and your five minutes of fame on the stage, and everything else that goes with winning, including a good ego boost!

And KD, COLLECT ALL FOUR! You did it! Now to get that final change in certificates! LEXAN!

And Dustin, good for you in believing and submitting without workshopping, and getting an HM. Nothing wrong with input, but it's good to trust our gut.

Best to all that entered. That takes courage!

Fortune favor the brave,

~Moon~

Thank you, Moon; you are in danger of giving me a swelled head!

Now for some reason I'm being pressed to investigate whether my various pro outlets met the 5,000 copies / hits rule as well as paying pro rates. Since my first pro sale was way back in 2014 and that outlet is not at present back after a publication hiatus, I'm afraid I don't even know how to start checking up on this. I really don't want to ask the surviving publishers, because I want them to publish me again.

Anyway I think 24 WotF submissions ought to be enough, particularly since the last 12 were all HM or better. For Dave I'm not quite doing it right. I have the equivalent of 23 form rejections and one personal (my semi-finalist).

Fortunately, as you say, I've had better success figuring out what other pro-editors want, and / or the sort of thing I write has more appeal elsewhere. So we'll just leave the pro'ing our decision where it is, which has the side-benefit of allowing my best stories to hit the wider market 3 months before they normally would.

But nothing says I can't hang around here and offer my (gradually outdated!) advice. wotf002

Whoa, very interesting. I like that Dave read it all the way through, and liked it. There's a ton of flash markets, so I bet it sells somewhere.
Congrats!

Ditto on Dustin's comments! Well done! Plus, I always look at flash as springboards for longer pieces. Remember: Dave likes world building. Very hard to do in flash.

That's amazing. Has anyone else ever achieved this?

Our late, lamented Dr. Phil scored everything but a win, including a Published Finalist. I kept rooting for him for that win. He could've been published far more, but his teaching was too important to him. Fiction had to fit around that.

Dr. Phil was special. I wish he'd gotten that win, but he left his mark on the contest anyway.

In case anyone is interested, all the certificates look exactly the same except they say "Finalist" or "Honorable Mention". The PF trophy looks like a winner's trophy, but says "Published Finalist". Rightly speaking I guess I should be aiming to win Grand Prize and really punch all the tickets, but at this point I'd just be happy with a win...

It’s been a week, JF, have you heard? Did Joni tell you how long they’d take to judge?

When you do hear, don’t forget to ask her which judges judged your quarter.

I did hear! I got 3rd (so surreal). I totally did not ask which judges were on Q4, but she said that Kevin J. Anderson laughed out loud reading mine. I pretty much died.

OMG!! Congratulations! That is SO EXCITING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There aren't enough exclamation marks in the world right now.

You should totally ask Joni about the other judges the next time you speak to her, though.

I did ask Joni about the judges when I got my results. They were: Tim Powers, Kevin J. Anderson. Rebecca Moesta Anderson, and... oh my lord. I don't remember any other name except David/Dave Farland/Wolverton.

Has anyone received their certificates yet from Q4? This was my first HM and I'm super excited. It's like a late Christmas present, only I'm not sure when I should expect to get it.
