I'm in. Finally just went with the ending I liked the best. Many thanks to my many critique partners. I learned a lot from this story and from your efforts. wotf009 I hope everyone has a very happy holiday. Onward to Q2!

Alica, and some others, as to your questions about F&SF and getting a personal rejection signed "Charlie," read this post below by Matt Dovey. Matt, I hope you don't mind my quoting you. Several of us talked about this on Q1, Vol 34, in the second set of comments. Seriously, any time you get a personal rejection from a pro editor, it's a good thing. They are very busy people. If they are taking the time to write you a personal note about your story, it means they observed you have skills and they don't want you to pass them up with your next. Just as Dave Farland enjoys discovering new talent, new voices, they do too. They are encouraging you to send more. Congrats!

Addressed crit concerns. Rewrote the beginning for better engagement. Removed a couple of asides. Thought of a better ending and then thought better of thinking it was better. Stopped thinking and did a final read-through.

Submitted.

Fully plotted and half done with Q2 submission.

Good luck, everyone!

May the Force be with you! You have successfully completed 1 in 35! Well done!

I am doing final read on another just under 17K story today. Yeah, that's WP count, and that's supposed to be good now. We shall see...

Cheers!

Thank you! I did 4 in 34 and 4 in 33, which is why I'm not over there on the 4 in 35 thread.

Anyone who needs an extra pair of eyes at the last minute can count on me to turn a crit around in a few hours if it's urgent. So don't miss out on a quarter due to lack of feedback.

Nice of you to offer that, Kent. But people from the Midwest are always nice! (I was born at St. Paul Ramsey, and aside from the doctor slapping me on the rear, I thought everyone there was most kind). wotf019

Be careful. The portal has a tendency to glitch on the last day. That's why I always aim for the day before, these days.

Oh no!! I remember scratching my head yesterday when I submitted, because the portal said it was open until 12:00AM on the 31st...when I thought should be 12PM. Maybe that was the error? In which case I bet Joni will fix it! *hugs*

^midnight on the 31st, I meant. 12:00AM January 1st? So if someone had accidentally programmed it for 12:00AM the 31st it would have closed 24 hours early?

It should be open until the end of today, PST if I remember correctly. I had a conversation with Joni about this last quarter and I think the issue comes down to programming the wrong 12 in the portal. It'd probably be best to just use military time; i.e. 00:00 January 1st.

First time I had to send it in via E-mail too. I found it closed at 4:08 PM Pacific Time. I used the same address as Morgan.

Never did get it back from my beta reader. He turned out to be exceptionally busy. But as it turns out that was okay. I did some major revising on the first three to four pages, a few sentences here and there in the main body and kinda of medium in the ending. Those pesky sparkling purple mini flying unicorns just won't stay where I place them. I added two more instead of the two I had. Getting them to fly backwards upside down wasn't easy. Tried to wrestle one of them but the other three came at me fast and hard. I ended up with Each hand and each foot on the back of a separate one as they tried to fly away with me. But I got them. Turns out they like white carrots better than the usual orange.

Anyway:
The POV is different but I won't say more than that. The revising I did seems improved. Turns out I repeated three times some event that happened in the back story. Originally I wanted to add more to what happened each time I mentioned it, but it sounded repetitive and probably boring. The ending a bit better.

The opening is better but better enough wotf017 There is only one way to know if he reads the whole thing and that is to get a HM or higher. Again wotf017

Beth, you're in. : ) Joni is exceptionally understanding about the foibles with the system on the 31st, as I'm sure you know.

This is the only time I can remember where I didn't submit in the last hours! I had a deadline with another publication, so I finished WOTF first, then wrote the story for that publisher in three days, just subbed it now. Feels good! What else can I write before this year ends? RIDE THE WAVE! wotf019

To all of you, don't sweat. Send it to Joni if the system seized up, she WILL understand. I always ask her in the submission email for a reply so I know she got it. If you don't hear back in a few days, check to be sure.

Best of success on your Q1 Vol. 35! And while we're at it, best of success on all your writing in the coming year!
