Thanks for the suggestion. I usually have 4-5 story ideas in various stages. Are their other contests you recommend?

There's also the annual Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest specifically for near-future, space-travel stories, which has an excellent reputation which is open right now. Many of the professional publications out there have periodic or recurring contests. Duotrope's Digest does list contests alongside other markets as long as they don't charge an entry fee. And, of course, make sure you've got a story in here every quarter while you're at it. IMO, WOTF is the most prestigious contest for new writers.

Hi! I'm newly registered for the forums.

I've been lurking for the past couple of weeks. I entered the contest for the first time for Q4 and am anxiously awaiting the results.

Hi, I've been submitting to the contest for 2 quarters now, but I just signed up on the forums. I'm a software developer and student by day, writer/blogger by night. Recently moved to Seattle from Raleigh, NC to shake things up a bit-- it worked. I've been writing more, at least. :)

See you around the forums!

Hello,

Not sure how many times I've submitted... one recently that I know of. Just got an urgent rejection. That made me smile. It was good to get it though... so often you send a piece of writing out and never hear back (talking about other markets here), and for me, it saps my ambition not to get the rejection notes. So, thanks, Joni!

On the other hand, it brings to mind the question--what am I writing now? Haven't written much since my 8000 words for nanowrimo... oh, yeah, I did go to one meeting and get some good stuff down... now where are my notes...

Appearing disorganized,
Mike

P.S. Not just appearing!

8000 words? Hahaha! That's awesome.

What kind of rejection notes did you get? I think mine was a form rejection advising me to join the forum and subscribe to Dave's newsletter. It was a nice one, and Joni did respond to me specifically when I confirmed I received it. No notes, though. But that's such a rarity. I'm happy for you.

Hello,
Name's Kyla. I'm from nothern Ohio. I've been a scifi geek since before I was born; named after an obsure Star Trek character. A highschool english teacher of mine told me about the contest. It took me a couple years to get the nerve up to enter. Just sent my first submission in and i'll be bitting my nails until I get some clue of how it goes over. Already working on number two.

Hi, Kyla. I wish you the best with contest entry. And as an aside, never be nervous to send something for publication. We noobs need to get used to rejection as quickly as possible--or maybe not in your case since you might be a winner. :)

I am trying my hand at the high art of writing science fiction. My background is pretty pedestrian. I have training as a chemist, mostly, so I guess that makes me a scientist. And because of that I like a bit of hard science in my fiction. I also enjoy fooling with computer programming. I have written two books and part of a third all unpublished, so far. I think that I am getting better at it. We’ll see. --- Jim Parsons

Howdy all. I'm a Clarion graduate and sf&f writer currently living in East Texas. I have 3 shorts published in very small markets and have previously gotten an Honorable Mention with WotF. My last submission didn't get that far, so I'm here to get a better sense of the community and the contest.

Good to meet you all!

My pen name is J. Jones. Been a storyteller for as long as I can remember but I've been writing since my j.r. year in high school, early 2003. Looking for tips to help improve and become a better writer as well as become a published author.

Hi, my name is Jerlana. I just submitted my second (or third?) story to WOTF. Live in California and love Stargate (NOT UNIVERSE! THAT IDIOCY DOES NOT EXIST!), The Dresden Files and Torchwood. I am currently getting a quarter-ante Facebook publishing company going and trying to figure out college. Hoping to submit for the next quarter.

I hate SGU, but at the same time I just keep watching it  It's kind of like the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica in that respect, or the third season of Millennium. I think it's Robert Carlyle's character that keeps drawing me back in, and the promise that it might actually have an original storyline one day.

I didn't much care for Torchwood originally (despite being a huge DW fan), but that season one episode, "Countrycide" got me hooked and the first season final, "End of Days" was fantastic. I really should check out season two and three one of these days.

Have you read the follow-up novels to the Stargate film - they're not too bad. As much as I love the film, I've become so used to the SG1 portrayal of the characters that I found it very hard to see the characters in the books differently. But it was nice to see an alternative take on the SG universe.

Anyhow, welcome to the forum!
Someone mentioned me somewhere, once. But, it wasn't here. And, it wasn't honorable. (A.K.A. 2x Rejections.)

Not to turn this into an SG thread, but I was actually rather enjoying SG:U for most of the season... and then came that episode where they killed off two female supporting characters in one blow, and I was like "OMFG! They turned my favorite supporting character into a Woman in the Refrigerator!"

(For those who are unfamiliar, Women in Refrigerators Syndrome is when female characters, usually love interests, die horribly as a plot device to motivate the male characters. It's most common in old-school comics, but it lingers in all sorts of media and is generally considered a sign of lazy and/or male-chauvinistic writing.)

As opposed to the feminist ideal of ... heehee ... the unsuspecting hubby that the Black Widow femme fatale has buried in the basement! :D

Naw, but you're right. Just riffin' ... but it's okay to have the "the woman in peril" trope though as long as she's in peril because she's one of the main characters empowered and steering the story and conflict etc!

My pen name is blackhole, and I teach physics at a community college. I'd prefer to remain anonynmous for now. I'm 0/2 on this contest, so just looking for some good tips to get published in this story. Obviously, I have grand fantasties about being a great sc-fi writer, but I'd like to just try and get something published for now. I've read a couple editions of the contest so I have an idea what kinds of stories win. Anyway, looking forward to the community.

Hello,

My name is John Hewitt (even though I prefer JT). I live in Greer, SC. I also like writing and reading anything that deals with magic, superheroes, Lovecraftian horrors, science fantasy, mysticism and anything that could fall into that category. I would like to see my stories published. Currently, I'm working on one short story and a novel. I also am writing down ideas for a futuristic fantasy (I just don't know what format the ideas will appear as yet).
