Vol. 34 (2018) -- Anthology, Workshop, & Gala

Postby jficke13 » Thu Feb 08, 2018 7:04 am

Hey all, thought I'd kick off a thread here with the cover of the anthology, which is predictably awesome, no?

Also, they forwarded me a .pdf eARC of the Q4 winners' stories. If anyone wants to read them, all they have to do is agree to post a review on Amazon/goodreads/bookseller-of-choice. Send me a message and I'll forward it along.

And lastly, every time they do something like send a proof, or a TOC with my name on it, or an eARC, I think "That settles it, they've come this far on me so they can't take it back now!" and then again, later... "now THAT settles it, they can't take it back NOW!"

The cover is so good and I still can't believe Brandon Sanderson is in our table of contents. wotf015

I also have an eARC (a different one from Jon's) with my story and the second and third place stories from quarter one in it. If you're interested in reading and reviewing that one too, drop me a line and I'll send it along.

Have a great time, Jon and Jeremy! We'll be watching and cheerig from afar! And looking for pictures of you guys (Amy too!) in the daily updates! Enjoy Tim Powers, he's a hoot! And Jeremy, don't vibrate too hard, that's how spontaneous human combustion begins! Would hate to see you go up in flames on stage, it would just ruin a good night.

Cheers!

I am definitely not cycling through the WotF facebook page & blog site & Twitter waiting for photos to appears so I can vicariously relive the week. Nope. Not me. Nuh uh.

Have fun, you lucky sods, and make the most of it! (Also note that "make the most of it" includes "hiding in your hotel room when it inevitably becomes overwhelming at some point in the week because then you can get back up and get on with it". The collapse is inevitable and happens for everyone. Accept it, go with it, feel no shame in it.)

Hello all, checking in briefly. They’ve got us running pretty hard, but we’re all in the midst of the 24 hour story right now.

Let’s see what I can pull out of a hat being inspired by a single one dollar bill.

Well by my calculations you only owe them 16 words at pro-rates; 17, if you're generous with your rounding. Then you've got more time for barcon!

How much time are the illustrators given to finish their artwork for the stories? Maybe that's their 24 hour challenge? lol

I think it's a few months--once the Q4 results are in around January and stories can be assigned, I guess. I know they submit a few sketches and the illustrator judge tells them which one to develop, because Adrian (my artist) told me he'd come up with 50 concepts before narrowing it down to a few to send in, and Ron chose from them. Which is a staggering amount of work and still makes my brain hurt. Though to be fair it worked out pretty well for him wotf013

Matt -- were you able to get a print of Adrian's final artwork for your story? That would be amazing.

I think pics of the reveal are up on the blog now. I’m mostly looking on In a dumbfounded haze. My face kinda short circuited. There was a lot going on.

The 24 hour story... man it’s a weird experience but mainly because of the stranger interview and the cameras (so... many... cameras). I finished at about 3000 words and thought it was a decent draft, but one I really needed more time to address the magic system I developed with more bounce and complexity. It’s not publishable as is.

Mine was not picked for workshopping, which is just as well.

The ones that were picked were really, astoundingly, good. A light coat of polish away from publishable. Dave described one as “if this were submitted for the contest is have put it in the finalist pile.” In 24 hours.

The writers in this class are inspiringly good.

Jon, I think the cameras recording your every move, every reaction, would be VERY disconcerting after awhile. It's not quite Big Brother or Survivor, thank goodness, but it's got to make you guys feel very self conscious. To all, enjoy the award ceremony and party tonight! You're all winners because you made it there!

Since for many reasons I haven't been hanging around here on the forum I didn't know who from here got to me on the show tonight. I caught one guy with long hair who mentioned the forum but they don't put up the names long enough to get more than a glance at them.
