Happy to say that I don't think I'm guilty of any of these in my Q3.

So glad that Dave is alright and recovered from his hospital stay!

I just read this. I think my Q3 might pass, but my Q4 is totally screwed. I appreciate Dave's thoughts during editing, they always help temper my expectations. He sounds so done with the stories haha.

Ha ha! I was JUST going to make a similar post about Dave's recent article. I couldn't help but feel sorry for him, lying in that hospital bed recovering, being forced to wade through one boring story after another. Poor guy. As if the sepsis wasn't bad enough.

I hope he's feeling better. Sepsis is no joke.

About the post he put up: I read his story Hellfire on the High Frontier in volume 32 recently (which was wonderful by the way). In it the MC is sitting, pondering about events. The descriptions are vivid and everything in the story ties into the beginning. In other words the pondering serves a purpose. If anyone wants to know how to write an opening to a story with an MC pondering, I suggest you pick up a copy of vol. 32.

That's a great point, thanks for bringing it up. I suppose it's all in the execution. I guess I will see, my Q4 might be too slow of a build given it's 12K length. My Q3 is much shorter and punchier but has a lot less depth.

I love his blog post "Poetics." The strength of a writer's voice is usually how I also decide whether I want to continue reading something or not. Having read an inordinate amount of books, I've gained this inexplicable feel for voice. I don't read past page one if the hook isn't strong enough. If the hook isn't strong, the prose better be good to get me to read past page two. I can invest in a chapter, if I know the writer well enough. I mean, I can read a grocery list written by LeGuin and call it a masterpiece yet have no patience for one page of some unknown writer. Yet a strong voice can carry me through everything short a cardinal sin in writing.

Talking of openings, I'm reminded of the "little did he know" scene in Stranger Than Fiction. Now, that was an absolute piece of great writing!

Spiraledpen here,

New to the contest and a little bit of an old schooler. Does anyone know how the mailed manuscripts get processed? I’m guessing most entries go digital. Do they get processed last? And if so, last to hear the trumpet sound (or the axe). Just a wondering...

Mailed manuscripts are boxed up and sent to the judge. And yes, they are a small fraction compared to digital, and yes, they typically get results later than digital. Doesn't mean they won't win though. Tina Gower's story was physically mailed on the last day and she won first place.

Potentially silly question here: does anyone know what number Joni calls finalists/winners on? The closer the end of the month gets the more paranoid I get that if (and that's a big, hopeful if) I get a call I'll miss it!

It'll show up as Unknown Caller, which was kind of annoying back when every spam caller on the planet blocked their phonecalls but now that they've moved on to area code spoofing, Joni's the only one I ever get with the Unknown label wotf001 wotf001 wotf001

And she absolutely will leave voice mail if she doesn't get hold of you!

I wouldn't get too worked up about it. As KD mentioned, if Joni calls and can't reach you, she'll leave a message and you can call her back.

My phone doesn't take voicemails! wotf003

I'd imagine e-mail communication if phone communication fails. At what stage would Joni give up? Has anyone seen any carrier pigeons recently?

Joni, like the Terminator, will never tire, will never rest, will never stop hunting you. She'll find you. By email if she can't get you by phone. They're not going to disqualify anyone because of communications issues!

The only cure for twitching is more twitching. Submit enough stories to enough markers, you stop investing so much emotional energy in the individual submission.

Cure might be an exaggeration - more like a bandaid.

I got the "You're still in the running email." So, still hanging in there...

Thank goodness Dave is okay! I completely missed that bit of news after life consumed me this month.

I mailed an entry last year when the portal closed early and I panicked my way to the post office. I did get my result later than most, but got an HM (for a story with an implied sex scene). So don't worry, I'm sure it'll be judged fairly.

Anyone care to speculate what place you'll receive?

...yes, I know some y'all will view this as sick or perhaps cruel.... But let's roll with it.

In the past three months, I've gone from thinking "I'm sure to win"... To "I'll be lucky to get HM". Now, I'm thinking SF. Reason: my story is awesome, but I had many spelling / grammar mistakes. Also, the sexual content rides a fine line of PG 13.

Sounds like fun to me. Might help alleviate the twitching! Obviously I'll win first place.

...Kidding! I think I'll likely get an HM. That or the misfortune of getting a First Pass from Kary only to get an R from Dave himself. Urgh, that'd sting...
Reason: My story isn't terrible by any means, but it's pretty short (even for a short story, honestly its closer to a flash fiction piece) and after Dave posted up his "Things to Bore Editors With" spiel, I realized I'd gone and done most of those in my submission wotf019 Whoops?

I think I'd normally have an idea of my placement, but this quarter was my first submission of a fantasy piece to this contest.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'm imagining at least an HM. I'd love to win, obviously wotf011, but if I can pull off something past HM I'll be ecstatic.
