Discussion: Q2, Volume 36
Either I'm blind, or this didn't exist until the day before Q2 starts.
Speaking of Q2, I'm poking at an outline. Yay!

Nope you're not blind.
I've starting my research and have a goal to write the first 300 words before the end of the week.
Yay for Q2! This is exciting.

I wrote a flash piece that I think I'll develop into my Q2. Hopefully quickly and get it subbed before the second to last day of the quarter.

I'll be editing close to the deadline for Q1, but I already know the story I'll be writing for Q2. I have an outline already sketched, but it's very broad.

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36
Hmm start thinking. I want to do one that is different from the one I submitted just now. I am doing one for another contest. Or do a revised version of one I have written already. As I said Thinking.

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36
This quarter will be a challenge for me. Going for my second knee replacement on January 23rd. So I really need to get a draft done before then as I know from the previous experience - writing will be out of the question for the following 4 weeks.

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36
This quarter's entry might be my easiest one yet. I had a story around ninety percent finished for Q1 when another idea took center stage.
Of course, if another story appears I will write something new.

Finish the 90 percenter, write another, and pick your best! You have time! Push your limits, don't go easy on yourself. This is the Olympics of speculative fiction. You have to train to your greatest potential to win...because others around the world are pushing themselves to their limits to win.

I'll be up for a swap in a few weeks if you're still interested at that point.
Until then, I've already reached my goal for this week and I'm now aiming for at least 1-2k words per week for my Q2 story and another 5k a week for the chapters of my novel's 3rd draft.
Busy writing is the best way to be. I don't know about you guys, but for me, writing is my kind of therapy. I always find myself smiling after no matter how happy or depressing the story may be. If it's been more than two days since I've written, I get irritable and my husband takes over the kids to give me some time.

Going to rewrite my HM for this one, which gives me lots of time to just polish. The story is done, only I think I may have to kill somebody. It's impossible to tell what was wrong with the story, since there's no feedback. My first hypothesis is always going to default to, "Maybe not enough people died."

Re: Discussion: Q2, Volume 36
I'm at 8000 words right now. I intended this for Q1 but I realized I wasn't going to make it, and broke off to revise an R. Like most of my entries, it will likely clock in around 12,000 when finished. I should be up for a swap at the end of the month!

Always tough to say for sure why the story didn't move further into the contest. Dave offered this information a while ago. Might be of some use.

It's funny that you say that. In my hm most of the characters bit the dust one after the other.
That being said, Morgan's' advice is spot on. Signing up for Dave's daily emails is very helpful too. He tells you what he looks for in a story.

That's awesome, thanks for the link. I haven't seen that one yet. I'm pretty sure I know what went wrong with the story, so I now have three months to correct it!

Everyone should sign up for Dave's Tips. I think he knows more about story than anyone living today. Plus, he's the coordinating judge--you can't win if you don't make Dave happy. He talks about how he won so many contests by studying the judges. Word to the wise. : )

I just finished an BIG re-write then edit on a Revise & Resubmit request.
So now, I have to THINK of an idea for Q2. All my ideas-in-waiting are more novel length projects. Plus, I want to come up with something completely new for me and off the wall. I don't have it yet. :(

JV - That re-write is still probably fresh in your mind. My advice would be to take a SHORT break and read some off-the-wall stuff for keyboard fodder, and ideas will start to flow.
