Agreed on the Grinder. Ralan.com is another excellent market source. Many pros use it.

Clarkesworld and Beneath Ceaseless Skies are others worth checking out too. Beneath Ceaseless Skies generally give a line of feedback and Clarkesworld are one of the quickest responders.

Congrats to everyone for submitting! It's hard work well worth the effort. After two R's, I have gotten my first placement, a SHM! Thanks to all the organizers, judges, etc. WotF is tremendous and this SHM has given me insights to major revisions of my novel and this forum has encouraged me to take a leap and commit to one new story per quarter! Love you guys!!

Great to hear, Forest Cat! I was told every one of those Silvers this time were finalist quality. Well done!

Keep up the good work, keep the faith, and NEVER give up! : )

I sent them my Semi Finalist and one of my HMs a few years ago and got a personal reply. So, I have been partial to them. wotf008

I get the feeling you've got a killer story, Kent.

I had a look at escape pod for submitting my q3, but mine is Fantasy and they're mainly focused on sci fi. Looks like a good publication though.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your support. In the same market "family," Podcastle is their Fantasy publication.

Thanks, Milo. My friend, Gustavo Bondoni, was in the list of finalists. Alas, he did not make the final judges' cut, and will likely pro out now. It's incredibly tough competition at the top, as all the stories are prime at that level. Huge congratulations to all that entered, and to all the winners. Very cool to see one from Australia, and the illustrators' side has one from Iraq and one from Turkey! We might be seeing more recorded acceptance speeches this year...

Speaking of Q3, did others get the email from Joni asking to reconfirm the response? I found I didn't have a response to my answer to her first email, and still don't have one to my follow-up yesterday, which is a little unusual. She seemed to think she was having bother with her email, and I wonder if she's right.

Likewise, I replied to her first email last month, but didn't get reply. Then, I received her 2nd email a few days ago asking for me to re-confirm. I did and then I got her personal response to say she received it this time. Her confirmation email took about 3 days--not bad considering all she's doing.

Ah, thanks! That's reassuring, I'll quit worrying until sometime next week then. wotf007

Last year, the mailman folded my certificate AND it got rained on.

The next day, I bought a new mailbox SPECIFICALLY so that would never happen to future certificates....

Folded certificates!!!
Totally worth a $100 mailbox fix, unless it doesn't work. In which case, the world makes no sense and doom is sure to befall us all.

I feel like I must be some kind of grinch. I don't even ask for the certificates (maybe if I make finalist or semi I will, definitely if I win :) ). But any certificates I've earned (Masters, Bachelors, Diploma, Certificate) are all sitting in a box mostly still in their envelopes or tubes unless the program gave a framed version then the framed one sits in the box too. I'd feel bad asking for one just so it could join the dark and gloomy box of history :)

I don't ask for certificates anymore either. Maybe if I get a higher place, I will. But since my HMs and SHMs mostly got trunked, those don't feel like as much of an accomplishment anymore, and they'd just be collecting dust with the certificates I have gotten.

I'm pleased to report that the mailbox I purchased did the trick. My certificate arrived yesterday. It was not folded and was completely dry (which was a wonder because it was raining all day).
